Quark's
- c/Quarks will change to "local only" when Lemmy 0.19.6 releases
EDIT 3: **Due to some bugs we're delaying this feature until Lemmy 0.19.6 is released! **
The goal of c/Quarks has always been to help foster a sense of community for StarTrek.website, but it is just a generic "offtopic" community and does not really have an identity of it's own on the Fediverse.
Thanks to the new feature in Lemmy 19.4, we can create true "local only" communities. And Quark's can be what it was originally intended to be, a place for our users. This will allow us to better discuss what kind of experience users of this instance wish to have (not just provide) without all the dorks on less cool instances coming here and ruining our weather control network.
EDIT: to those of you concerned about missing out on "trek-adjacent discussion" @ValueSubtracted@startrek.website has indicated they plan on loosening the "on topic" rule of /c/StarTrek to include more of that.
EDIT2: If anyone is interested in growing and operating a community on our instance, please feel free to reach out or comment here!

- StarTrek.website has updated to Lemmy 0.19.7
We were previously on 19.5, so this is a double update. You can see the changes here. Most of the update is some back end stuff,
we are also looking into some federation delay with instances that haven't updated yet. The Federation delays appear to have been resolved on our end. - Federating Issues with Lemmy.world?
I’m wondering as a relative fediverse noob - are there any known issues when federating with lemmy.world?
I ask because I run a They Might Be Giants community there that I created with an alt account and moderate with my account on this instance, in part because as giant as they may be, I feel like a They Might Giants community doesn’t fit this instance (if I am wrong, might consider migrating it).
I made a post ~14 hours ago and it still hasn’t shown up on other instances. I’m guessing it’s either lemmy.world is a ginormous instance or it’s still on 19.3. I just find it weird because I’ve made posts without problems before.
Anyhow, glory to the admins of this instance; they honor their houses.
- Defederating from Hexbear.net
This instance has defederated from hexbear.net for violating our rules against propaganda as outlined in our Terms of Service. If you are unfamiliar, federation means two servers sync and host each other's content. Defederation stops us from syncing their content to our server.
- Reddit is making sitewide protests basically impossiblewww.theverge.com Reddit is making sitewide protests basically impossible
It’s going to be a lot harder to pull off massive protests.
I quit as the top mod of /r/StarTrek in 2021 in protest against Reddit's platforming of vaccine disinformation subreddits. Then in 2023 during the API protest, myself and several of the remaining mods (including mods from /r/Risa and /r/DaystromInstitute) started StarTrek.website.
The consensus I've seen on Lemmy has been largely "we don't need to spread the word about our open platforms because Reddit will do something stupid again and there will be another protest and Lemmy will be promoted there". So I hope we can take this as a lesson that we can't rely on platforms being shitty in order to switch society over to open standards. We need to do our best to make Lemmy/Mbin/Piefed good as well as known.
- Calling all Marvel Snap players

- Interest in a Star Trek Comics Community on this instance
I’ve thought it would be nice to have a venue to discuss Trek comics, but I’ve always felt it would be weird to reference non-canon/dubiously canon stuff from a less popular medium in a main Star Trek thread.
Thus, I was wondering if this server has sufficient interest in such a thing to create a new community just for Star Trek comics.

- StarTrek.Website has upgraded to Lemmy v0.19.5!
Hi everyone,
We've now upgraded to v0.19.5 - this update includes the changes from v0.19.4, which we had not yet upgraded to. This is a relatively big one, and you can find details here:
---
Here are some of the user-facing highlights:
-
There is now a dropdown option to hide posts.
-
You can now view and delete all images you've previously uploaded.
-
Federation has been improved in a number of ways. It's now possible to federate with Wordpress, Discourse, and NodeBB. Federation with Mastodon has been improved, and we should now be federated with more servers on that platform. Most posts to our communities should automatically receive a hashtag matching the community's name (e.g., #startrek, #daystrominstitute, etc.). This is dependent on the poster's home instance, though, so only posts from servers which are running v0.19.4 or higher will receive the hashtags.
-
There's now a user setting to change how votes are displayed - you can see or hide upvotes, downvotes, score, upvote %, or none.
---
I'd also like to remind you that we have two alternative interfaces available:
-
https://old.startrek.website/ is a suspciously familiar-looking user experience.
-
https://vger.startrek.website/ is a nice mobile-first experience. If you've ever used the Voyager mobile app, this is that.
Edit: We also have a wiki, which is open to users who feel inspired to develop resources for this community!
---
Finally, we remain eternally grateful to all users who are able to support startrek.website by contributing to our Patreon - your generosity helps to keep the lights on!

I added it to my watch list because Robert Duncan McNeill is an executive producer, and finally started on it yesterday. Definitely enjoying it so far.

-
A friendly reminder that we also have mlem ("old reddit") fronted installed too for those that prefer browsing in a familiar interface on desktop.
-
We do plan on updating to Lemmy 0.19.4 sometime this month so keep an eye out for that!
-
If you've noticed the site hitching lately it's because we were reaching our storage limit (again, oops) so we purchased significantly more storage that appears to be helping.
Big nuqneH to our Patreon supporters for keeping our little corner of the Fediverse on the air a whole year and also allowing us to add features like these frontends and wiki (editing is open to all!) If you'd like to pitch in we have just one plan and it's only $4.

While it won't make a useful spaceship engine, it may tell us more about relativity.
>The researchers did indeed discover a warp drive solution: a method of manipulating space so that travelers can move without accelerating. There is no such thing as a free lunch, however, and the physicality of this warp drive does come with a major caveat: the vessel and passengers can never travel faster than light. Also disappointing: the fact that the researchers behind the new work don't seem to bother with figuring out what configurations of matter would allow the warping to happen.
