This is Daughter's of the Confederacy propaganda, which has been around since immediately after the Civil War. Better known as "The Lost Cause", it seeks to distance the losers of the Civil War from their disgusting motivations.

One part of pretending racism doesn't exist is getting offended when people call out racism for the horrible problem it still is.
That has the side effect of perpetuating racism.
I can think of non racist reasons why someone my get offended but they are all horribly selfish.
