As President Joe Biden faces a growing drumbeat of pressure to drop his reelection bid, most Democrats think his vice president would make a good president herself.
I wrote a lot and then deleted it. I think I can sum this all up and get to my personal eureka moment more quickly.
I am a centrist (I know, boo boo!) and Biden fits probably 75%+ of my personal policy ideals. A Kamala presidency probably doesn't buck that much for me, so truly I wouldn't mind her at all. I draw question in her ability to achieve policy goals relative to Biden's experience and demonstrated borderline Houdini ability to get things passed regardless of political climate. At worst, she's a lame duck that maintains the status quo and builds upon Biden's legacy.
That's not why I am not confident in her as the nominee, it's getting other people to vote for her too. I think she courts all of the Biden voters without at best, and loses a few percent at worst. It's more or less at best a slightly higher ceiling and a much lower floor. Who cares about the lower floor though, right? It's the ceiling we care about.
That's the part that got me thinking... What about her running mate? What if she picked someone like Mark Kelly? He polls well. He's someone who could flip swing voters, and he's in a swing state! When you start considering the strategic value of moves like that then NOW I think someone like Kamala is more appealing.
Long story short... I think if she brings in someone like Kelly that could help flip a swing state, it actually might be the difference maker in the race. Thusly, I am certain the DNC will not do that.
