He admits he was drunk at the time and he doesn't seem the sharpest tool in the box at the best of times. It probably seemed like a good idea to make his actions less of a hate crime, presumably forgetting about all his other nonsense.

He was convicted of "racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress" for the wealth of nasty shit he said that day.
