Using references to monkeys, especially in a discussion about racism doesn't need anyone to reference black people. That is the reference. Here's some good reading on the subject.
If you want to use the ancient form of it I would make sure to declare a noun as being ape-like. "Trump supporters are a bunch of scared apes."
And even then they'll act like it doesn't matter.

No, I think it's a poor choice and one that you can easily avoid in future. It skirts really close to racial if not fully over the line.
