Create
$HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirswithXDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/downloads"
You may need to logout/in for things to reread this file.

- XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR

XDG User dirs are cool, i agree. But that's not really the problem here
