When several is used, i would assume it's more than half of the children.
So, either 4 or 5 of his 6 children are protesting.
Edit: 5 would be most of his children.

i love depicting language this way to decipher meaning but in reality most people don't all abide by the same set of rigid rules that i want them to.
this is certainly reasonable, though.
- A couple: 2
- A few: 3-4
- A handful: 5 (because fingers)
- A bunch: 6
- Several: Exactly 7, always.
- A number: 8-9
- A whole bunch: 10 -20
That's about it off the top of my head.
- A lot: 20 to 100
- A shitload: 100-1000
- A fuckton: >1000
