Former U.S. Marine Corps pilot Daniel Duggan will be extradited from Australia to the United States over allegations that he illegally trained Chinese aviators
Summary
Australia has approved the extradition of former U.S. Marine Daniel Duggan to the United States over allegations he illegally trained Chinese military pilots in 2010 and 2012.
Duggan, who renounced his U.S. citizenship and has been in an Australian prison since 2022, faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted.
Prosecutors allege he received $61,000 for the training.
Duggan denies the charges, and his family has criticized the Australian government for failing to protect him, expressing disappointment and weighing further options.
I did just read the story on a different website, and it says he was indeed no longer a citizen when he helped with the training. He had apparently had filed everything to renounce his citizenship a few years before this all took place.
Additionally, the school he was teaching at was in South Africa, where some Chinese students were attending. It's not like he waltzed over the Beijing with classified materials.
The whole thing reads like a crocked up sinophobic nothing burger.
EDIT: Love that I'm being downvoted for pointing out basic facts in the story.
He had begun teaching a few years before renouncing his citizenship, but the accusations only came several years after in 2017. And again, these accusations are against a South African flight school that trains civilian pilots. He's absolutely being made an example of because of anti-Chinese sentiment in the US.
