I've seen the movie, and I think Forrest was functioning just fine despite the odds
It's been a while since I saw it, but wasn't he actually more or less of regular intelligence, just like... very positive, friendly and not jaded compared to other people?
He never displays any intelligence that I can think of. He kinda just does whatever the last person told him to do and is really good at everything.
