Mato Seihei no Slave • Chained Soldier - Episode 1 discussion

Here's a spoiler-less "what to expect" based on the manga. The series boils down to three elements:
it's executed in a very simple and straightforward way, but it's well done, in a way that those three things don't conflict with each other. So if you like those things you'll probably like Mato Seihei no Slave, otherwise you'll probably want to pass it.
This is super helpful in setting my expectations. I think it will all come down to execution in the anime for me. I am not fully sold from the first episode, but I see the potential there. At least it is off to a better start than many truly generic isekai that are completely forgettable.
It's no masterwork, but it's fun. And I agree with you - it's way better than the "pulp magazine" isekai that you see every season, and looks nothing like them.
Haven't started on this, I enjoy the manga immensely but at least a third of the reason is the author's ability to immaculately arrange ink on paper into searing hot babes.
Also the fights are tense and characters likeable. An annoying VA casting could easily ruin this for me.
The way this anime sounds and looks will make-or-break it. If it doesn't get it right, I won't bother and just stick to the manga.
Yeah, from what I gather, this series isn't really breaking new ground in its concept, so it really needs to nail the execution to set itself apart. The first episode was a lot of setup, so I am willing to give it a bit more time to see how things evolve.
IMO it's different enough. It has that something that the first arc of Trinity Seven did, where it's just another harem plot but it makes some changes that make it less cringy, more funny and appealing than most.
For me it's that the manga is just so damn good that unless the anime matches it, I feel no need to spend time on it, where an anime-only viewer absolutely would.
Really, truly strange to have an anime with dominatrix imagery where the main girl seems to not consent to the ecchi scene she's the top for. Not a vibe a like to see.
On the other hand, the rest of the show outside the ecchi seems really bland and boring, with nothing really notable except the cgi (which looks predictably bad).
Overall, I can't really give this premiere any higher than a 1/5.
I decided to check out this series and so far, it hasn't really captured me (unlike how Kyouka captured Yuuki). The worldbuilding seems interesting if not really that original with these otherworld incursions into our world and enabling powers to awaken in some humans (only girls in this show's case). The most original bit of the whole show so far is Kyouka herself. Her character design is great and the power that she has is custom designed for the ecchi shonen that the tags promised.
The way this show is set up, Yuuki becoming the caretaker of the dorm full of girls, is a throwback to so many old harem shows in anime's past. I know the source readers were really excited about this one, so I am hopeful that there is more to this series than we have seen so far. If it is solely relying on ecchi to carry a subpar story, it isn't going to live up to the hype.
