DISCUSSION: Episode 20

Last weeks thread - 26 Comments

Dungeon Meshi is a well liked manga, and an adaptation by Studio Trigger is now airing. If you haven’t picked this one up, consider joining us. Both for fun and as a way of contributing to activity on Lemmy.

Episodes are available to stream on Netflix.

Izutsumi's membership in Laios' party is off to a rocky start. The gang is running low on food again, and unlike our former main quartet, our new feline friend isn't taking well to the idea of eating monsters, and is taking it out on her new friends.

As the journey continues through the now frozen fifth level, the gang starts looking for the next monster of the week to cook up for dinner, while refusing to treat our new neko-buddy with anything but kindness.

Remember not to spoil anything if you’re a manga reader, but feel free to elaborate on tidbits of lore that may not be coming through in the adaptation.

  • Even as a retainer Izu was acting freer than most, and right as she has gained real freedom, she is now chafing at the restrictions of a survival situation.

The gang is genuinely trying to co-operate and form a relationship of fair "give and take" but Izu has very little experience with being given anything, not without a catch. And while the catch in this situation is very real in that the gang is hoping shell be helpful and pull her own weight, they are not her owners, nor do they want to be.

Voluntary co-operation is very new to this young cat-person. But the gang is refusing to show her anything but kindness despite her prickly attitude, let's hope they can gain the fickle trust of this feline friend!

And she can move! Chil and Izu dealing with the Ice golem was wonderfully animated, though she didn't seem to pick up on the fact that without Chilchuck showing her where to apply her combat skills, she would have been screwed, and she ends up taking credit for the whole thing.

Chilchuck is still the bigger person in the end. I love the details in how he, and later Marcy, talk to Izu about what it means to be a functioning person. How being too hedonistic and selfish is counterproductive, and that being more well rounded in how you go about life, requires that you show concern for others and consider the bigger picture.

I belly laughed at Laios' wanting to "explore" Izu's body. Of course he would want to know every detail of this exotic creature that is Izutsumi!

I was overjoyed to see Izu in the OP, too! I wondered last week whether they would add her in this week, and sure enough, here she is!

  • I am late to the party on this episode, but it was a fun one. I think my two favorite bits were both Laios-focused. First there was Laios literally scaring away a pack of wolves through his dog impression. Then there was Laios being a little lot too interested in the anatomy of Izutsumi.

The inclusion of Izutsumi into the OP and ED was nice and is a good indication that she will remain a core part of the group going forward. I do think that, even if she doesn't care about the others at all, her actions were a bit reckless this episode. I mean, even if she hated the others, she has to recognize that, this deep in the dungeon, sticking with other (kinda?) capable adventurers raises her chances of survival as compared to wandering around on her own. I mean, even look to the ice golem fight during this episode as an example.

The sheep plant monster is weird...I kinda think I would have stayed away from that one. I trust you Senshi, but I don't know about that. Give me a candied Mandrake any day of the week over a plant that grows fully formed sheep that taste like crab. That just has God's mistake written all over it.

  • Izutsumi's appearence in the opening caught me off guard.

    • She's not a side character, but having her in the OP before that point would have spoiled that.
