Federation Check-in vote completed

Hello users of Hexbear,

I wanted to make this post to inform you that hexbear will be temporarily changing to requiring an application for new users. This will stay in effect until after the upcoming pictrs version, and the development of additional mod tooling.

After many complaints mods may begin removing Yakub memes as well as any explicit comment asking a user to post hog, the difference is that while "post hog" is allowed with extreme prejudice commenting "show us your tiny penis" is not allowed, removals will be subject to moderator discretion.

In addition, we would like to reiterate that Hexbear is a space for all our comrades, even if you may not understand their experience, please refrain from labeling a fellow user a wrecker or troll. Using conditions as a pejorative is not allowed, please engage in good-faith and remember the human!

Finally I wanted to hear the user's thoughts, opinions, comments, and proposals regarding Hexbear's recent federation with other lemmy instances.

There are two mod based proposals that I wish to open voting on:

  1. Should we add sh.itjust.works to the hexbear.net/instances allow-list
  2. Should we remove lemm.ee from the hexbear.net/instances allow-list

  • I think federation is getting better. The Libs are either learning or revealing their true colours, and frankly the amount of successful converts is too satisfying, let's not stop now.

  • In regards to the federation vibe check - I was worried that federation would ruin the comfy vibes of our website and our sense of community. I'm glad that it didn't turn out that way. Our posters are too damn powerful

    I don't know what is this new instance about but let them in. It's too fun to dunk on lemm.ee users so we should keep them in as well. Besides, some of them turned out to be cool

  • More to pipeline.

    Every thread mentioning socialism that we don't participate in just creates more anticommunist nerds. Same for china topics and so on. We should be everywhere.

    We will also find more comrades and every single comrade we gain is objectively worth the mental suffering of bad lib takes.

    I think also that as time has gone on issues have eased off. The worst libs have been permabanned and now things are calmer. It's pretty clear that federation creates an initial problem that explodes followed by things chilling out as the numbers of problem people thin out due to moderation. We can handle initial problems until things cool off as they have done everywhere else. Maintaining communication lines and being persistent about the fact that things calm down and settle as moderation reaches maturation is probably essential to making these federations work though.

  • Allow both of them. Recent history shows that we're having more fun dunking on shitlibs than they're having posting cringe.

  • because sh.itjust.works is where I first started before I had my communist awakening, and I know them, and I know they will defederate from us anyways. But in the short moment of federation, we might be able to convince any lingering lefties on there to join us. And shitworks will decay and decline further to the right, which will eventually lead to its destruction.

  • I see no reason to defederate from Lemm ee, and I'm fine with adding the just works instance as long as they don't keep posting neo Nazi flags to their non credible defence community. If they continue to post neo Nazi flags, we can always defederate, like we did with the blahj instance after they acted in an immature fashion.

  • lemm.ee seems fine, and tbh sh.itjust.works will just defed hexbear very quickly, this is what their lead admin had to say about lemmygrad (emphasis mine):

    In the middle of writing this comment I've discovered that he's made a comm for decisions like defed, and they seem pretty dedicated to it although tbh I'm kinda sure sh.itjust.works users are just going to call hexbear a bunch of tankies and vote to defed, but you might actually be able to get them on your side somehow...

  • Slow down. Things are going okay-ish, but there's a lot in the pipe with lemmy. We have the whole per user instance block, which will affect enjoyment of federation a lot. There's the ongoing mod tool stuff and the csam attacks. We should hold off on major changes to federation until stuff gets sorted or blows over.

  • lemm.ee is scaling back massively in response to the lemmy.world CSAM spread, handling the whole situation fairly well, so in favour of not removing

    sh.its.how instance... torn, feel like maybe waiting for instance blocking (would help both directions)
    but mods and admins here have been doing well and feel it'll be a net positive so voting with them
