If it's the latter, that's just a terrible name...
System76 have today released the first alpha preview for you to try out COSMIC...
It was in pre-alpha previously, today is when it officially entered the alpha stage with its alpha 1 release, they also have planned features/changes for the alpha 2 release somewhere as well.
Oh. Okay. Well I look forward to giving it a go when the stable version arrives.
