They got the phone he left in the backpack he bought to leave on the side of the road full of Monopoly money. Them getting that phone was part of the plan.
Seems like that dude is just leaving crumbs for them to find, giving him more time to get away.

You know, they never mentioned how much monopoly money it was.
It makes me wonder if they thought to count it. There's more statements to be made, especially if there was a phone there.
