Italy cracks down on self check-ins for short-term vacation rentals

Italy's police chief has ordered Airbnb-style owners to verify the identity of guests in person rather than remotely as visitor numbers surge, according to a circular seen by AFP on Tuesday. The measure is put into place following security concerns linked to the expansion of tourist accommodation.

airbnb is the devil. it’s literally ruining entire neighbourhoods and communities with people that only have their vacation brains switched on. they need to be regulated, hard.

  There are a lot of issues with zoning laws that don't fall into the knee jerk libertarian category. A lot of places disallow things like mixed use zoning and high density residential.

  But I admit I'm one of them, though I also recognize it's not an easy thing to do well. Whenever something like this comes up for a vote in my area, it really takes me a while to figure out the pros/cons, long-term implications, who benefits, etc.
- Yeah we have a cabin in a nice secluded area which used to be just home owners to get away for a week or so and a few people who lived there full time.
  It was a nice getaway to go fishing and have a campfire.
  Then airbnb took off and people bought in to the neighbourhood to simply rent out the cabins every other week and now there's strangers running around partying, setting off fireworks, looking into windows of people's houses, etc. we are thinking we might as well rent out our cabin now because it's just not enjoyable anymore so might as well profit like everyone else is.
Yeah, those are really great for hiding from authorities. Use some burner account, rent a flat, never meet anybody. Osama bin Laden could still be alive living in some AirBnb in Barcelona.
- You don't even need to share the names of everybody who's going to be staying. My sister-in-law likes to rent AirBnBs for the whole extended family (I no longer participate because fuck AirBnB and fuck that level of crowding while on vacation).
