Found a map of BC fault lines from a CBC article dated 2015 and it's crazy af. The whole province is covered in them.

Thanks for digging that one up. That's a pretty insane map to look at honestly. Just about everyone in BC either lives on, or near, a fault line. That really helps put the level of geological activity in the province in perspective.

Earthquakes Canada has put the magnitude at 5.1
U.S. Geographical Survey (USGS) measured the earthquake at magnitude 4.8
That's a pretty good exchange rate!

Work sent everyone out of the office for 10 minutes. Havnt heard of any damage

Is this a freak occurrence? How rare or common are these?

We've been overdue for a very big one for a while. Kids do earthquake drills in school, infrastructure is slowly being prepared for it, and alert systems are tested annually
But past that it's rare to have any shaking really
For example, this article opens with
'It was quite scary': Metro Vancouverites react to 5.1 magnitude earthquake off B.C. coast
"I think the first that comes to mind is, 'Is it leading to the big one?'" one resident said.
