Why are there right- and left-wings? Why not also up-wing and diagonal-wings?

Pre-revolutionary French politics. The conservative royalist faction sat on the right of the king and the liberal faction sat on the left. It’s pretty stupid that we still use this terminology, not least because it lumps together political factions that are quite distinct but whatever. Been meaning to read up on this so feel free to add more if you know more than my cursory understanding of this topic.

I'm not based in Europe, so I'm asking the dumb question here. After an example from the US, how and why? What can we do? 😞
Right wingers tend to be stupid and arrogant, and almost universally at least one of those things The stupid won't make the connection until America collapsed and the arrogant will think they are better than that even if every example proves them wrong.
