I think he / she (I can't tell) is just nibbling the tang.
If only there was some kind of gender-neutral pronoun that could be utilized to refer to someone that is always correct regardless of gender
Everyone's a they unless they tell you otherwise
And sometimes they just like to stick with 'they'
