Why does it seem like Americans are obsessed over home invasions? Do you have a lot of them?
Constantly see people online talk about "when the robber comes thru my door" or whatever, and some of it is memes, but a lot of it is just people legit discussing what the "best weapon" to fight robbers breaking into your house at night would be - Giving it so much thought as if it is a legitimate concern. So is it? Does it happen a lot?
One answer that doesn't seem to be around is that it is/was literally in tv advertisements. Security systems and insurance companies love to run ads showing scary people dressed in black forcing windows open and shit, and chuds probably see a lot of ads.
which is very stupid if you're going to rob a house it's just objectively better economy to wait till everyone's out way less jail time for the same gain
There was a show on Discovery that ran when I was a teenager that basically had two guys go around and do "break-ins" where they'd talk to a random homeowner after they cased the joint or more likely just had a list of volunteers. They'd then have a guy break into the house, possibly while the person was in the house and rob them blind, or they'd do it when they all left, trash the place and take everything. They'd always have a bunch of insurance ads and security system ads running and in the end they'd install a super fancy security system into the house and act like they're safe now.
As a child we got robbed, they really didn't take that much since we weren't exactly wealthy, just a rather crappy old mac computer got taken and most of the games I had. But the absolute mess of the place and the feelings of violation and vulnerability led to me being rather paranoid. Something that show played off amazingly and made it even worse. Most people don't have this actual experience, but they see shows like that and believe it's happening all the time everywhere and they're in constant danger.
