Is a fart a fart before you fart it?

Like a volcano, when it's still inside you, it is magma.

When used as a noun a fart refers to "an expulsion of intestinal gas¹" or "An emission of wind from the anus; an instance of breaking wind²". So, I would say no it is not because it is defined as leaving the body. While in the body it is flatus which is gas in or from the stomach or intestines.

Is a fart the gas itself, or the passing of the gas? The definition says it is the passing of the gas. Therefore, a fart isn't a fart until it's been farted.

- As a professional Fartographer, I can confirm this is the correct answer. Sometimes you're feeling confident that you're hanging out with a fart, but then it comes out to you as poop.

A fart is only a fart when it exits your body. Before that, it's gas. Exiting transforms it to a fart.

I think that a fart is specifically gas passing out of your intestines. Until it does that, it's just gas.

If farting is the act of pushing gas out your ass, a fart is the act of the escaping wind. So gas has to leave to be a fart.

Kinda like how Magma becomes lava once it leaves the crust of the earth.

A fart isn't a fart before it has erupted. Before that, it's called "magma".
If you hold a fart in long enough, could it become a burp? Or does that only go one way, from potential burp to fart?
- I've heard of a person that can't burp. or rather has an extreme discomfort in burping due to some accident that hit the shoulder neck alignment.

- Possible TMI warning, I'm into stuffing my butt with dildos and will occasionally do a deep clean with a large enema, around 6-8 liters. When I do that much it pushes the gas in my bowels back through to my stomach and it makes me burp. Gross but neat
