A suspected arson at a hotel in remote Rosscahill is the latest in a wave of attacks on asylum seeker housing, amid rising anti-immigrant rhetoric fuelled by far-right groups.
The government did not speak to the local community before they agreed to house 70 foreign nationals in their village which has a population under 400.
The accommodation is not fit for purpose, with only 18 rooms.
The local area does not have a regular bus service, and the hotel is about a 40 minute walk bad roads to get the stop that will bring you to the city. That costs about €8 of the €38 they get a week.
As per usual over here we are aware of a problem and how to fix it and can't seem to marry the two. I have no doubt there were right wings fools at this blockade but to flag it as a sinister turn in Ireland's anti immigrant positioning is not looking at the big picture.
The government does not build housing, during a housing and immigrant crisis. They are putting these people in the middle of nowhere without a plan. This is not the beginning of this crisis, the government could have made significant progress in temporary accomodation construction on any number of the Greenfield and brownfield sites they own but they haven't.
This hotel has been out of service for years, there is nothing local, and the people were not informed before this decision was made. It's not anti immigrating, it's the results of disenfranchisement and an arrogant populist government.
Yes, that is how you solve the problem of too many refugees being in one area. You burn down what little they have and then go on the internet to take issue with the tone of how it is reported not the arson itself.
To be fair, I don't think anyone had moved in there yet.
There is nothing new here. There has always been a vocal, violent, right leaning minority in Irish society. There have been two instances that have made headlines around the world in the past few weeks that may make it seem like Irish society in general is leaning further to the right. I hope this isn't true.
Because you won't fucking address it. You posted an entire screed praising the brave work of freedom fighting arsonists against a government that horror upon upon horrors put some non-white people in a town fleeing their homeland. So until you address you BFFs who quite literally burned down a place for refugees people are going to continue ask you to address it.
It is like that old Kids in the Hall sketch where a guy takes issue with being called a murderer not because he didn't commit murder but because no one is mentioning all the times he didn't commit murder.
I'm taking issue with the implication being this is a right wing turn against foreign nationals and not a result of piss poor communication from a shit government.
I mean as a form of protest against throwing immigrants in the middle of nowhere without a proper plan, in a tiny town that likely can't support them....Yeah, why not? Not exactly the most ideal plan, but hey, it makes people pay attention.
Maybe because everyone can see how you are trying misdirection and taking issue with the wording of the headline instead of the arson of a refugee center. My response to hearing that someone burned down a building full of refugees is not "well really it is the government's fault also they aren't telling the arsonist's side of things".
Governments are as a general rule incompetent, that isn't an excuse for fucking arson
Yes I am a moron for calling out someone apologizing for bigots who committed arson on a refugee center. So how did you commit the arson anyway or are you more of a watcher vs a do-er?
I kinda do and kinda don't. I am curious what things went wrong in a person's life that thinks a solution to people of a different race, who are also refugees, being given help is arson. I also don't quite want to get in the mind of the terrorist apologist.
You know it's like when you see a big car accident, you want to see it and don't at once.
Also worth mentioning that Ross Lake Hotel was recently sold and I heard the new owner was going to be converting it back into a single house. I wouldn't be surprised if the new owner decided that was going to be harder than he thought. The timing of it all is very suspect
