I'm glad that I don't use Reddit anymore, unless forced.

Forced, no. But as a dev, Google leads me to a lot of reddit posts for troubleshooting and discussion.

Reddit was an essential part of the internet. Thankfully it's been mostly archived.
Losing the data from Reddit would be a catastrophe on the level of the library of Alexandra.
The people who run Reddit know all of this and thus the reason they want some much money for things like the API.
