Is that a headphone jack!?
I like headphone jacks.
I'm here with a usb c to 1/8" jack like a moron! The EU pushed replaceable batteries, maybe we need a headphone jack bill haha.
Paradoxically, all cheap devices come with one, and even with an FM radio, so cheap devices actually have more stuff than high end smartphone. Also please give me an FM radio FFS, it is one of the most usueful services during emergencies and other situation, also I like listening radio thanks
I LOVE the idea. I'm slowly mutating into a wired earbud audiophile (not sure what they call themselves), and the sound is just so much cleaner; plus there's nothing to charge.
4 hours of music on these ones!
Mine just plug in.
i bought a "new" phone just because i was sick of using the shitty ass headphone jack adapters
so now i have 1 phone for music and the other for games 😂
Bring back transparent shells, I want to see that sexy technology god damn it!
Check out the company Nothing. They make products like the Nothing Phone with transparent designs
Fairphone 5 also has a translucent back option.
I'm curious about the 30 day battery
Could just be the regular battery not having to supply power to an energy sucking spinning disk.
Probably the same original form factor but a new lithium ion
I think the SSD uses more power than the original hard drives do. I bought an adapter for the iPod classic to put an SD card in it and there was a few articles about power draw being higher for ssds. I might be misremembering the comparison though, it's been a couple years.
They sell 3000mah replacement batteries vs the original 850mah. I think some solid state drives can save power, but others can use more.
That's as long as some fiancés.

Now do my boy, Zune ❤️
Yo...I still have two HDs that work... they're amazing
Man, the Zune was the best MP3 player experience in its day... They even had the OG music subscription service. For $15 bucks a month and then they let you keep $15 of music forever. So it was a no brainier if you'd buy an album a month anyway.
Are you preparing for a zombie apocalypse?
Anyway, this is the coolest shit I have ever seen today, and maybe the best one here on Lemmy!
If I was I’d be playing the theme song from 28 Days Later in the picture ☺️. Thank you!
Dude that thing is sick. I use my phone for music, and it's okay except for the dozen spam calls I get every day interrupting it. And there's no setting for that, of course.
Many phones have "Do not disturb"-mode, or even airplane mode.
You can also go into the settings and disconnect from your mobile provider if you really want peace and quiet.
For real I wish there was a way to get my phone to play only music through headphones or speaker. Any time I get a notification I want it only through my phone's speaker and not what I'm listening to music to.
Do you have a guide or a part list or anything? I still have my iPod I bought new in 2006 but it hasn't seen use in many years for a slew of issues, the main one being the headphone jack itself failing, but I'd love to refresh it like this.
Ditto. My 5.5g ipod video looks like he'll, but I'd like to bring it back to life.
Look at then_three_more's post in this thread
Shoulda used clear purple for that real nostalga hit.
But awesome work
Yeah but is it still locked to iTunes? Cause fuck that noise if it is.
Otherwise... I'll take 3
Edit: looks like it is... damn
It's a quick Google search for an alternative software that is pretty user-friendly and independent of Apple.
Also I suggest replacing the Hard drive with a card that lets you put in SD cards.
Back in the day, I used to rock iPod Linux. Looks like it's still about http://www.ipodlinux.org/
There was also rockbox that let you play flac on iPod. https://www.rockbox.org/
Or less exteme, I'm sure that foobar2000 had plugins for managing your iPod.
I ‘member putting a movie on a tiny little Nano. And Doom. Girls nerds loved it. Simpler times.
Both made possible by Linux IIRC!
Rockbox is the GOAT
it let's you use the iPod like a USB drive where you can play anything that you put on there. it can also play ogg vorbis or vorbis or a lot of at her formats.
I got my 2 Gen Nano in 2008 and ditched iTunes after day one, EphPod worked just fine.
If you like this aesthetic, perhaps check out the Tangara on Crowd Supply. https://www.crowdsupply.com/cool-tech-zone/tangara
It's fully open-source, too, so anyone can contribute to making improvements and a company can never discontinue it.

Tell that to Yuzu.
That's dope!
Always cool to see ‘retro’ tech brought back, especially with major overhauls. Kinda wish Apple still did dedicated ‘dumb’ MP3 players, if I’m being honest.
Bet you could manage with a microcontroller and some parts. Use a bare chip, solder it all fancy (might take a few tries, use something cheap, order in bulk, attach the big expensive drive last), print the case, etc. Bet there's even a guide out there somewhere.
I've seen a few open hardware projects for "dumb" MP3 players over the years. I found this article on the Tangara project and am tempted to build one.
Edit: Scrolled down and saw someone already posted this.
Cool.
Love personal playlists. I use an old phone with SD card to use Bluetooth into my home theater system.
Well that's awesome and I think I've found a new favorite sub.
I still got Planet of the apes on mine. They wanted people to know it can run mp4's on that little screen.
Dude thats so cool! Thanks for sharing!
damn!
if you don't mind me asking:
how did you create the transparent casing? It looks really great and I'm not sure if it was 3D printed or some other way
Does it still count as “imadeit” if I made it using a hodge podge of other people’s parts? Haha, I ordered the custom shell from eBay ☺️ but it feels very high quality (not 3D printed)
What's that little black thing that kinda looks like a tiny antenna in the top right corner, right next to the battery indicator/percentage?
Let me tell you son. Back in the day, headphones used to have a wire
I thought it was copper. 🤔
I thought it was an bt transmitter before I saw the cable in the bottom of the shot. A lot smaller then the fm transmitter I have.
I know the angle is a bit weird, but that is a wired headphone/earbud cable. The cable just has a 90 degree bend at the end.
💀
I would like to buy an ipod and mod it but it would cost too much.
Is this a kit or custom? Did you 3d print that case?
There's a bunch of places selling replacement iPod shells, I think there's probably just one factory that makes them but the iPod mod scene is actually pretty extensive all things considered.
I'm not aware of any 3d print methods or materials that can have that level of transparency, that has to be injection molded.
In industrial 3D printing you can get this amount of transparency with clearcoat. You can send your model to them and they print and ship it to you for quite cheap. On pcbway it's UTR-8100 Idk if other sites have something similar.
You can buy one exactly like this here: https://player-mods.com/
Cool, thank you.
Does it play FLAC?
Rockbox does support FLAC, with iPodLinux I'm not so sure (their ancient http site FAQ promises development via MPD, but that's not a given to have actually happened).
or Opus
Just Doom and Crysis.
With rockbox installed, yes. With stock, ALAC.
One day I will upgrade my Zune 2nd gen into a modern device, like this. I can only hope the software keeps working for syncing, at least until someone writes a custom OS for it.
Veronica Explains just posted a whole video of how to do this.
https://youtu.be/8fP6bnsobJ4 (She hasn't posted it to PeerTube yet...)
Veronica Explains is a godsend
Can you put music on it without iTunes?
Yes. I still use my classic regularly. 20 000+ songs on it without ever being connected to itunes. Rhythmbox for linux works great when I want to switch things up. Winamp did the job back when I was still using windows. Maybe you were forced to use itunes briefly back when the ipod was first released, but it didn't take long for other programmers to figure out how to make their software compatible.
Nice!
The issue I have had with ipods in general is even with third party management, you had to make a Playlist for everything. I wanted to dump my library of A-Z folders and use the device like a file structure.
I'm in the minority, but I stopped making Playlists/mix cds/mixtapes when I graduated high school.
There is rockbox that is an alternative firmware that adds every feature missing by default
Typical Apple, they probably won't even tell you that you need a 2007 MacBook with a 12 second battery life to make this work. That's how they get you.
It looks like funar2000 supported it at least at some point.
I can still connect my iPod to the current macOS
Okay I’m jealous.
Jesus, I almost cried when I saw this
How did you get an SSD on it? 30 day battery is really impressive
I would pay a decent amount of money for this.
https://player-mods.com/ well you're in luck cause you can buy them
Dam they cost more Modded than New 10 years later.
Well, I'll be damned. Thank you!
Would the Rockbox firmware be an improvement?
I prefer the aesthetics of the classic iPod OS ☺️
I tried it before. It's kind of superior to stock OS, but I can't stand the way the menus work.
Pro tip: you can replace the clicker with an iPhone taptic engine, I forgot which one you should use but a quick Google should tell you.
Nice! I keep meaning to order a clear shell for my 5.5 Gen, but have done a battery and flash swap on it. My 4th Gen and my 2nd Gen mini are also flashed and they've been amazing too.
So cool! Thanks for sharing
How much to make one for me?
I'm actually thinking of starting up making things like this if people would buy them. How much would you be willing to pay?
Depending on audio quality, $150-200. They've got rockbox on them right?
You beauty! How did you install 30 days battery? Where did you get it from ?
Probably just normal battery. Thing was massive and heavy
Unless you have the screen on constantly, the device doesn't use much power other than sending a signal to headphones
there's also a ton of extra space once you remove the hdd, it could be mostly battery
Use a LOD cable and an external amp. No DAC since the iPod classic has/had a good one internally (for then time at least)
HOW DO I GET ONE OF THESE
