  • In most of the world its participate in capitalism or go to jail, not like you can just go live in a tent in the woods without being dragged out. (Unless you live somewhere like the US which still has really big woods.)

  • True, however there are different ways to do it, I think its Denmark? that gets more than double the yield/acre than the world average utilizing a lot of greenhouses and what amounts to pretty much hydroponics lite. If half of agriculture land suddenly didn't need to be used that way it would be huge.

  • Some of the stories do also include solutions to those same issues, though that also tends to lead to limiting the capabilities of the robots. The message could be interpreted as it being a trade off between versatility and risk.

  • I'm not saying its a good reason, just a reason. We could easily afford it if we took some of that magic money that goes into military funding blackholes or magical infastructure projects that never get built yet somehow break records on cost. Sadly the decision is being made by people with no sense of empathy or value for human life.

  • iirc one of the issues is that even if things go perfectly on a military front no one is quite sure how to handle and de-program/rehabilitate 25.5 million people a large quantity of which likely lack any skills that would be useful in western economies.

  • You know it was always one of the big points that got brought up in hypothetical WW3 scenarios that the US has enough food to support itself even if it went totally isolationist. Kind of incredible that they found a way to fuck up one of their greatest advantages.

  • I was tempted to do a 'Every person on lemmy is a bot except you' before realising that the bots have taken that kind of post from us as well.

Edit: Come to think of it the way bots work is kind of like an automated version of how big companies used to kill memes by using them in their marketing to try and seem trendy. Murdering internet culture automatically by washing it out with repeated garbage.
