  • My mom's exasperated "shit a fiddle!" when fed up with something / something broke. When I was younger, she didn't really say curse words around me except for this.

I've never heard any one else ever say this. Not in Appalachia, or anywhere. She probably made it up herself. But in the 80s she also dated a Korean War fighter pilot/POW (crashed, survived, & captured, unsure of release details). And he could have had a creative catalog of swears that she borrowed from.

  • Just to really make sure you have the correct visual... gravy spatter in my hair & everywhere, sobbing uncontrollably, half-naked no-bra 48-year-old plus size crazy lady standing in her kitchen, worrying about the rest of the meal getting cold.

I wasn't a fan last night, but writing this all out now is making me smile at my absurdity.

  • A not so good moment... last night I thought I'd try making a gravy base with my shaker bottle now that I'd finally found it again. The gravy packet says to mix with hot water THEN bring all that to a boil. I'm used to using cold water first but whatever. Turned the kettle on, dumped the mix in, poured in scalding water, tightened the lid down on the bottle...

This is where my physics teacher is shaking their head in the afterlife and going "oh no... you didn't..."

    Yes. I did.

I failed to account for hot liquid being sealed in an environment greatly increasing the pressure in said environment.

And when I shook the bottle, the pop up lid popped open (violently) and a geyser of scalding hot half-mixed gravy sprayed out. Over me, my face, the stove, the cabinets, and the ceiling.

I'm simulataneously scared to death by the sudden explosion and the fear of burning, as well as trying to let my ADHD crisis mode take over and have my cry later.

Ripped off my shirt to get burning gravy bits off my skin, grabbed nearest towel and wiped the rest off as quickly as possible. Ran cold water over my arms in case of burns there, found a cold pack in the freezer for some burns on my neck that were really stinging. Then held the grungy towel to my face and sobbed all the scaredness out. My honey was standing there helpless not having witnessed the Old Faithful recreation and me not being in control of my words yet.

By the end of the evening, everything felt like no serious injuries. I'd held the cold pack in place most of the time. I haven't addressed the Jackson Pollock gravy on kitchen yet. But I will once I can get home from babysitting hvac installers at my FILs.

  • My honey downloaded the Oblivion remaster for me. I think he was waiting for a bigger sale or for us to play through some of our other unopened games, but I really really wanted to start it and he obliged. 😍

My FIL is worried about being able to pay the balance of the bill for the hvac people installing his new heat pump today. My SIL has been keeping him at her house following a short hospital stay, so I'm on deck at his house to let hvac people in, etc. I tried to tell him that I don't think they're gonna hold me up by my ankles and shake the money out of me if he can't produce a check this evening. He says that exactly why he's not coming to the house himself and instead "sacrificing" me. It may have been one of those you had to be there moments, but it really had me cracking up.

  • There's a whole island on the west(I think?) coast of Australia where you can visit little quokkas!

The last time we visited Australia, we were only in Victoria and Tasmania, but found a wildlife park that had platypus encounters. They let you put on wetsuits and get in a tank of chest high water to "play" with a youngish female platypus (no spurs, no venom). By "play" we had to stand pretty still and let her explore us. She was very curious. And then they let us hand feed her. My soul left my body. It was the best day ever.

  • I just spent a few days sitting with my FIL in hospital. We binged Gunsmoke. I am a reluctant fan of Festus now.

    • do they have you scheduled for any sight-seeing like CT or MRI scans?
    • can you order UberEats to your room? I watched them come and go frequently and wondered if it was for employees, inmates, or both
    • do you ask all the nurses for crunchy ice?
    • have you asked that one nurse for a bed bath?
    • are most of the nurses pregnant like they were at my hospital? Wtf is in the water?!
  • If I can't leave work because important meetings I can't get out of, I'll go sit in the car and breathe, or excuse myself to the bathroom if I have to (including going to another floor sometimes) and try a quick grounding exercise like rainbow grounding or the one where you visualize a warm light filling you from first your toes, then calves, then knees, so on and so on. I can usually hold myself together afterward until the end of the day, but I know I will be falling apart that evening. I will prep the honey to pick up pizza or order DoorDash and plan on playing Playstation.

  • I am in Virginia. My Lidl has good traffic but isn't crowded, so I don't come home cranky like I do from the big American grocery stores. I primarily go for the meat section (and the fun random household goods section) but it has enough of my other regular products that I can usually keep my other store visits down to once a month. It feels like I'm shopping while on holiday in Europe. And let's not forget they stock wayyyy better chocolate.

  • Maybe I haven't bought truly massive "butts". 😅 They fit in my 11" vacuum sealer roll (also from the Aldi aisle). I shop in Lidl more now but I still see circulators and vacuum sealers in the middle aisles every so often.

  • cats @lemmy.world

    I'm pinned. Send help.

  • I would run mine somewhere between 24-36 hours. I have an old cooler that I use (don't use one you actually like because the extended heat exposure warped the cooler walls some lol). I have a cheapo stick circulator that I picked up at Aldi for $25 over 10 years ago. I haven't seen the sense in getting a Joule or fancy set up.

I cover the cooler with aluminum foil because plastic wrap would not hold up. Then I blanket my little DIY pork bath in a beach towel to help cut down on evaporation loss.

The recipe that I used before suggested broiling it to finish. But like you, I now have a wall oven that can do convection. So I'd like to try it at 550 and see how that turns out.

  • Generic extended release methylphenidate was what my primary care doc first tried me on. I noticed it a little and thought ok, it's still really hard to function. What do people mean that getting on medication was a game changer for them?

After about a year of this, trudging through my day still, I got in to see a psych about a month ago who switched me to Vyvanse, and holy cow. I'm functioning again! Wtf?!

I will say that my sleep has suffered some, but that's a little bit on me for not taking my meds early enough in the day.
