Rather than either of us keep our house, she wants to sell it and split the equity we get out of it. Fair enough, I can agree with that... But then she said she wanted to dump it on a flipper for 300k, when comparable houses have gone for 430-450. I said if you're going to let it go that cheap, let me buy you out. I crunched the numbers, we owe 150k, so I'd either refinance or assume the loan, and give her 75k (her half of the difference between the sale price and what we owe) - she accused me of trying to screw her over. "I'm not letting you have the house for $75k!" "That's right, you're not- we (the couple) would be selling it to me (the individual) for $300k, it's the same as dumping it on a flipper, just that I'm the flipper!" There was no getting through to her. Eventually she agreed to try and sell it properly for what it's worth.

    to me... Evidently she had made up her mind months ago, but wasn't going to tell me until her job situation improved...

  • That was typical of cars made (for US market) in the early to mid 80s... Can't remember for sure if it was part of the whole national 55mph speed limit, but I'd bet it was.

  • I blame office staff- when I had my wisdom teeth removed, it was going to be a shit show, so they sold me on "putting me under"- insurance would only cover local, but "you don't want to be awake for all the digging and prying" which did not sound like fun so I agreed, at a cost of $400. Of course I woke up in the middle of it, and got to experience the digging and prying... Didn't hurt at all, but it was still disconcerting. I found out later this wasn't anything unusual. Had I known I would have been awake, I wouldn't have spent the extra money.

  • You know what really "cleans up" public transportation? More people riding it than just those who have no other choice. I grew up in Boston, lots of people rode the subway, I never felt unsafe. Now I live in Phoenix, the bus system sucks so bad I couldn't even tell you what it feels like to ride one because I never have, anywhere I want to go would take at least 2 routes if not 3, with nearly an hour wait at each connection, I could seriously ride a bicycle there quicker, and have, even in 110°+ heat, at least in my younger days- damn near gave myself heat stroke last time I tried which was ~5 years ago... I have at least ridden the light rail, which isn't terrible, but doesn't run very frequently, and isn't that close to my house, and doesn't go that many interesting places... I could take the kids to the science center, but it's a bit long for them to walk to our nearest stop, about a mile and a half... There's a park & ride, but at that point, we might as well take the car...

  • Many years ago, my girlfriend's grandma said I had a good voice for radio. I misheard her, thought she said a good face for radio. I didn't react badly at the time, because being polite and all, but I didn't like her grandma for a while. Then it came out what she had really said, girlfriend had a big laugh. I don't remember what grandma thought of it, I was a little too embarrassed to have any attention to spare...
