  • A 1.8%pa degradation over 10 years would be, 83.39%.

Linearising it to make it "more intuitive" I guess.

But 2%pa degradation gets you very close to the 18% over 10 years figure. 1.9649% to be more precise.

Over 20 years you are down to ~67% and ~55% at 30 years.

  • Looking from the outside, what the US has lacked is the "strong regulation" part.

In my opinion the US is way too far on the capitalist side of the slider, you are not at "pure capitalism" yet. But sometimes it doesn't seem like you have far to go.

Private prisons are just a ridiculous, over reach of profit making into what is at its core a social problem that requires social solutions.

  • The only good billionaire
  • The communism / capitalism debate is an interesting one. Each system has its advantages, and I am a strong believer in a strong compromise between the two extremes.

I don't think that workplaces should be collectivized as a default. I also think that strong regulation and "big" government is a positive thing. The government should set the rules, for the benefit of all, but the game should be open to all players.

I am also a very strong believer that there are some activities that are far too important to leave up to the market.

    • Health care
    • Education
    • Infrastructure
      • Water
      • Waste
      • Roading
      • Public transport
      • Communications
    • Social welfare

For everything else, let the market decide. Collective ownership of cafes and hardware stores isn't really something that needs to happen. But I would also be happy if a collectively owned cafe opened up nearby, I would give them the same weight as all other cafes (how good is your coffee).

  • The only good billionaire
  • Agreed, if you have a billion in cash sitting around, then do something with it.

But in this specific example, and really any example where someone gains their wealth from "doing stuff". It is not liquid, sitting around in cash to hand out. It is usually in stock of the company they found.

While they are "young" and energetic making the world a better place, then keep on doing what you are doing. Once you "retire" from that then it is the time to donate.

  • The only good billionaire
  • There are different ways to accumulate wealth.

In an example from my country, Sir Peter Beck, is only a billionaire because the stock value of RocketLab has rocketed up (pun intended). His total compensation for the 2023 year was just under $1M. Source

I would rather that he concentrate his efforts to making the best rocket possible; he could in theory split his time and work to reduce poverty...but I believe that the rocket building would suffer.

There are a lot of other people working to reduce poverty.

I agree with your point that in general, most billionaires are shitty people who could do a lot more. But some people are billionaires because they are doing cool shit.

Will Sir Peter become a cunt in the future, who knows. In 10 years will we look back and see the decline to Musk levels of cuntishness?

  • Disney's Snow White | Official Trailer
  • Yes because fair skin implied that you were rich or upper class. White/pale skin = not working the fields or as a maid cleaning and getting dirty.

That notion got turned on its head relatively recently, when in the 1920 Coco Chanel got a sun tan whilst in the French Rivera. Being tanned no longer meant that you were "low class".

A lot of old fairy tails are about paths to becoming rich. When Snow White was written it had little to do with race, if anything, and everything to do with classism. There was virtually no social mobility, if you were born poor you stayed poor! These are not aspirational stories designed to motivate you to better yourself, they are there to remind you of your place in the world.

  • It just means that you can run industrial gear; maybe was owned by a keen potter previously. Big kilns need 3 phase power. No it isn't common for domestic, but I have a few friends with big shed that have 3 phase power for machining tools.

Depending on what capacity the supply has; e.g. if you have a smallish 80A supply you can run a a good sized CNC mill in you shed.

  • hmmm
  • What breakers are there to protect is the cable in your wall.

The cable should be rated to run at 100% load continuously (with some safety factor for running a little more); depending on the breaker rating and curve (usually C curve in New Zealand for domestic).

So a C20 breaker can supply 120A for 1s before protecting the circuit; this allows for starting motors.

Now a breaker is different from an RCD which measures the difference between the phase and neutral lines. If the difference is too high the circuit trips. This is to protect the fleshy thing holding the knife in the toaster.

    Make android kinda dumb

I am thinking about getting a phone for my son.

There are some really cheap android phones around.

But I also want to restrict what he can do on it while he is still young.

I was thinking something like net guard but with a password, so the settings can't be easily changed.

I could just get a dumb phone, but I also have some old android phones hanging around.

What options are there for this kind of app/network control?

Oscar the grouch, is an ambush predator

I was having a conversation about characters from various childhood shows.

I always thought that Oscar the grouch didn't make any sense. Why would you live in a bin?

But it occurred to me that maybe the Grouch evolved to hunt like a trapdoor spider, they hunt mainly racoons but also cats and anything else that happens into their bin.

Initially forest dwelling, with the rise of human civilisation; they have become adapted to living in cities which afford many pre-made "burrows" (bins). The lure of easy food, brings their prey to them.

I was reading a post about unique things you wouldn't want, such as a nasty medical condition named after you.

    That got me thinking.

What is the most unique thing.

Being the tallest person doesn't count, because there is always a tallest person...

I thought maybe units of measure, there are not really that many units named after people. Newton, Pascal, ampere etc... Turns out there are quite a few.

Next thought was atomic elements, there are 19 named after 20 people. That is fairly unique 20 people out of the ~110 billion to have ever lived, have an element named after them.
