Altering a headline in this manner to push the propaganda narrative that NK isn't a dictatorship and that SK are actually the true "occupiers" would get you banned on unbiased comms/instances

Four US soldiers killed in Lithuania, Nato secretary general says

  • Yea you got a point, and I for one generally don't consider someone to be a tankie just because they have a .ml user account.

But like you say, there are assholes everywhere and LW is like what triple the size of the next biggest instance? Bigger instance, more assholes. Just like with cities and crime, a big city always seems like "crime everywhere" but once you balance out the numbers it's actually not bad more often than not.

And the biggest problem isn't even just a rogue mod(s) they're not taking care of, it's the admins/devs who I always see in the modlog. It's clear that they're using their instance's influence as a tool to further their political stance.

It doesn't have to be this way, if the wider Lemmy-verse defeded from them as they did the rest of the Tankie Triad, stories like yours probably wouldn't happen

  • ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ just because you got lucky or didn't notice doesn't mean it doesn't happen

Here, I brought receipts of this exact meme playing out of them protecting an "in crowd" member. A mere 24 hour timeout for calling people scum and "shitlibs" when anybody else even mentions "tankie" gets 14/30 day bans

  • I don't think it can, it's a flagship because it's the first instance, being run by the main devs as a demonstration of Lemmy's capabilities so it's always on the latest beta version at least.

But, they could just stop using it as a tool to further their own political stances and have it actually be a "generalist" instance. For that though, they'd have to give up being the admins of it, which they'll probably never do.

It is of concern yes, but maybe if the wider Lemmy-verse defeded from them, like they did Hex and Grad, it would at least be easier to say that their views are not shared by any of us to any newcomers/outsiders by being able to point to a clear and visible action like defederation.

  • Hmm yes, how dare I pushback against authoritarian misinformation, propaganda, censorship and toxicity. I do what I can within my power to prevent (or rather having it get worse I should say)the Lemmy-verse from garnering a rep outside for being "That Tankie Place" or worse, Voat 2.0

I've already seen it on Reddit and testimonials here (from those that actually tried to give it another shot, who knows how many won't ever come back) "I tried that Lemmy place, but it was just a bunch of tankies" is not a pleasant comment to read outside the Lemmy-verse

What I've documented on !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works is but a mere fraction of the crap they pull and focused on just .ml

    Btw, tankies are authoritarian "communists"

  • Nah that's pretty much about it, between .ml having "the big comms" (by subscriber count only) and being a support hub the decision to defederate is a difficult one, probably intentionally.

Imho, screw the support hub and defed anyways, there are alternate channels.

I don't think Lemmy well ever be forked, Rust is rather difficult. The way I see it, either the devs gets their personal political stances under control or Lemmy will give way to up and coming replacements like piefed that are written in much easier languages and can be developed a lot faster

  • Hex and grad are tankie instances that are very in your face about it and don't carry the honor of being "the flagship" instance and as a result were easy to widely defederate from which led to most people here not having strong opinions on it

.ml admins are hardcore tankies, but try to maintain .ml as the flagship and thus are more subtle about their tankieness. Instead opting to just censor any dissenting opinions before things get crazy in threads.

As a result many instances are way more hesitant to actually defed from them like they did the rest of the Tankie Triad, thus leading to more widespread visibility and in turn more widespread dissatisfaction of them by most.

Checkout !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works (for those on a .ml account you'll need to use this link because, ironically, .ml admins censor that comm from you: https://lemmy.world/c/meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works ) for documented instances of their behavior

  • Just to let you know, lemmy.ml, Hexbear and Lemmygrad are known as the Tankie Triad and are incredibly toxic if you dare say something like "Russia is in the wrong for invading Ukraine".

If you'd like to see documentation please check out !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works

Tankies are authoritarians, they will deny any wrongdoings of the CCP/Russia/NK, happily push their propaganda (i.e. RT) and will censor you if you are in dissent of their viewpoints. They deny that NK is even a dictatorship.

  • Yes it would be, but most instances have been hesitant to, unlike they did with the rest of the Tankie Triad (Grad and Hexbear) because .ml is supposed to be the flagship Lemmy instance and as a result has a number of official support comms and some of the biggest (by subscribers only, if you look by MAUs it's a much different story)

On top of that, they tend to be much more subtle about it also unlike Hex/Grad which are very in your face about it. Instead opting to just censor any dissent before it gets too crazy and people catch on

So the hope is, if enough people boycott .ml, close down comms they're in charge of, purge threads and bring down traffic even more etc it'll be a much easier decision for LW Admins and admins everywhere to defederate.

  • There is an instance block, accessible from the web UI at /settings (so for you should be startrek.website/settings) blocks tab

But the big issue with it, is that in it's current implementation it's more of a mute rather than a block

You won't see their content, but they can see...and interact with...yours. So if you make a comment justifiably shitting on Putin or something, they can downvote brigade you, make replies you can't see to shit talk you etc
