Does anyone actually use the windows key on their keyboard as intended by the OS?
  • As others have said, I use it mainly for the search function to start programs as well as many shortcuts. I've seen others mention screenshots and locking, but here are a few more:

    • Win+. - Opens the special symbols/emoji windows
    • Win+ left or right arrow - Snaps a window to the left or right half of the screen, respectively. Up arrow maximizes, down minimizes.
    • Win+r - Opens the run dialog
    • Win+v - Opens clipboard history (history is off by default, it will ask you to enable it the first time you use the shortcut)
    • Win+x - Opens the 'quick link' menu (Power Options, Event Viewer, System, Device Manager, Network Connections, Disk Management, Computer Management, and Command Prompts
    • As a bonus, my favorite windows shortcut is Ctrl+Win+Alt+Shift+L, which opens linkedin in in a new browser tab.

  • Advertiser exodus from X gathers pace with 26% ‘planning to cut spending’
  • For me, it was about being able to watch yt on my tv and mobile devices which are not able to block ads as easily as a desktop browser. I have a pihole on my home network, but it hasn't been able to block yt ads for a few years.

  • Instagram thinks I should reduce my privacy protections
  • That is what the Ad Nauseum extension does: "AdNauseam works to complete the cycle by automating ad clicks universally and blindly on behalf of its users. Built atop uBlock Origin, AdNauseam quietly clicks on every blocked ad, registering a visit on ad networks' databases. As the collected data gathered shows an omnivorous click-stream, user tracking, targeting and surveillance become futile."

  • I don't think I've ever heard that fastener called an Allen bolt, just the tool (Allen key). I've generally heard them called hex sockets heads. Maybe it's a regional thing?

  • Ditto. I left during the api stuff, but left my account in case they calmed down and realized it was stupid. The whole 'selling data for ai training' and actually filing for an ipo is what actually drove me to delete my 15 year old account today

  • Google gets its way, bakes a user-tracking ad platform directly into Chrome
  • Some websites intentionally change behavior based on your user agent. There are plenty of extensions for Firefox that let you change it so sites think you're using chrome instead. It's wild to me that's even a thing, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • What are some things you can/should cheap out on?
  • Generally agree on tools except for stuff that needs to work in an emergency even if you don't use it frequently, or stuff that can pose serious safety hazards if it fails.

My understanding is that most cheap tool brands save costs in QA and material choices (e.g. lower quality steel), which is what leads to things like the harbor freight jack stand recall.
