  • Shrinking. For whatever reason I forgot about the whole cast other than Ford/Segel by the time S2 came around, but I remembered how much I enjoyed S1 as soon as I threw it on. Finished the season within a couple of days. A+

  • Just to be totally clear: Steam OS is a distro for the Steam Deck. It's great that they based their handheld's OS on Linux. There is pretty much universal agreement that is a net positive for gamers. Up until recently, there wasn't a way to install Steam OS on a device other than a Steam deck, except by using third party tools to hack together a bootable version of the Deck's recovery image. That's now changed - Valve have recently released generic install images of Steam OS. Hence this post about a Valve dev's comments about Steam OS competing more directly with Windows, which it previously did not on really any level.

I don't think anyone in the thread is positing that Valve creating Steam OS is a negative. I and the other poster are saying that regardless of whether the dev's comments are truthful, the reason Valve has now released Steam OS more widely is money-oriented, not some altruistic act toward gamers. The benefits to gamers generally associated with Steam OS are simply not related to this new development. Steam OS is not an especially useful distribution for PC gamers. For example, it doesn't include Nvidia drivers like other gaming-oriented Linux distros. But one feature it does have is that it's inseparable from the Steam ecosystem. And while you could describe Steam as "a games store", you could just as easily and accurately describe it as "a DRM platform". In other words, anti-consumer, money-grubbing, etc.

  • Of course, but that isn't what they're saying in response to the topic of the post: the question of what the point in making steamOS available for PC's is. Is it the main reason? I'm not sure it is, but you can be sure that if it isn't contributing to Valve's bottom line in some way, it wouldn't be happening.

  • I'll remember because by the time I put it in there I'm close to dying of thirst, but still won't drink something at room temp. So forgetting and then remembering my crippling dehydration is generally a pretty good egg timer for it

  • Maybe in the context of an ideologically opposed global hegemony, you're right. Maybe we should do something about that.

  • The particular lineage of the derivation of the standard isn't important so much as that it is arbitrary in the same way as imperial units. Not derived from physical constants, unlike SI (or older metric systems)

  • You can run it anytime provided that the noise at the border of the property doesn't exceed limits set by the local council. In the event of a neighbour complaint council will come out and measure it

  • Is it just me or has the main character really done nothing all season except several failed attempts at a supply run? My brain keeps tuning out

  • FWIW you can fix the aspect ratio issue on the firestick using ADB to force the device to display in a 4:3 resolution (except when using streaming apps that force 16:9)

If you want something privacy oriented you'll probably need to build some kind of NUC. To my knowledge no off-the-shelf streaming device respects privacy

  • There are things like torrentio now which lend BitTorrent piracy a more integrated UX, and that has definitely extended the lifespan of its usefulness to me. Torrents rarely max out my line speed these days, mostly because I have 1000X the bandwidth compared to when I first started torrenting 20 odd years ago. But it's still one of the fastest and simplest methods to get any file you want, so I think it's relevant

  • Tell it to shut the fuck up (it works, that's why my grandfather likes it)

  • About as many people as you could imagine fitting in my store, were in my store, 8am til 6pm. It was hell on earth, but we got through it. I have the weekend off for once, so cheers to that!

  • Doing the usual 2 functions, one each for my mum's and dad's side. Drinking away the boxing day sale anxiety (retail worker). Looking forward to prawns and scallops I got from sealanes and marinated in garlic and chilli from my uncle's garden

  • Prepping my store for boxing day sales rn. I've had one staff member quit with no notice and two called in sick all last week. It's made my life hell, but I support them all. Honestly fuck this business. If I could afford to I'd do the same

  • Heretic, which was better than I expected. La Palma was also decent. Don't really remember much of this week's episode of Silo.

  • Legit when I'm feeling shitty about my current situation I just think back to the pure hedonism of raving in the forest a few months back on psychedelics and remember experiences like that are real and I can do things like that again in future. Then everything feels ok

  • No worries, you're fine at describing what happened, there's just missing context. Like, she was demanding you to go to the shop to buy things for yourself, or for her, or for you both? Was there some standing obligation for you to do that outside what's in your post?

  • Then she calls me up and tells me to go to the shop to buy some stuff. She says I’m not your mother.

Are these events linked? Strikes me as ironic given demanding someone go to the shop to buy stuff is like... Something children do to their mothers.

I don't think you have to forgive her, but you could move past it, which is sorta different and is an option that preserves your relationship.

Like, acknowledging that she is this way and it's unlikely to change, taking steps to protect yourself from that kind of behaviour, but deciding to love her anyway.

  • Depends on the type of festival I suppose. Speaking generally though alcohol is by far the biggest contributor towards antisocial behaviour, injury etc at festivals. It's also the drinker that's more likely to overdose like you allude to. Drug testing tents in other parts of the world disseminate information about dosage and ways to be safest. They seem to be ban alcohol almost independently of any decisions about drug testing.

    If it's a rave, 100% ban alcohol

  • Will be interesting to see how this plays out vs NA & Euro examples given the relatively high level of party drug adulteration in Aus.

Next step: make festivals alcohol-free. As long as there is de facto sanctioned interaction between party drugs and alcohol, incidence of negative experiences and associated antisocial behaviour will be high and reflect negatively on party drug users.
