People from Italy, Czechia, Poland, Hungary and others, how are you dealing with the Boris storm?
  • Italian here. Luckily it seems like the place I live now has been barely touched by Boris, but my wife's parents are stuck at home with flooded streets and whatnot. Hope it's not going to be as bad as last year.

  • is this true?
  • Luigi / Duck Hunt. What the hell does that mean?

  • What movie have you rewatched the most?
  • I believe it's either The Blues Brothers or 2001.

  • The "white" tie actually has a small deep blue pattern in it, the photo really doesn't make it justice (but I'm still open for changing things up). I tried some double breasted but none of the models I tried on felt "right"; and yeah of course I'm going to try to fix up some of the hair ahahahah

    Girona getting dismantled
  • I believe it's quite obvious that Girona can't operate at the same kind of level that Man City does, even if they belong to the same state fund. Market just opened up, I wouldn't be surprised if they placed some interesting transfers aimed at generating income for the team while consolidating the identity of the squad. Plus, Savio leaving for Man City is quite a telling sign of this behaviour, imho.

  • England - Spain (21:00, Berlin)
  • not really; 30 minutes of decent football (which is kind of expected considering the quality Southgate had available) and nothing more.

  • England - Spain (21:00, Berlin)
  • I wouldn't say he's been a disappointment. His role as a striker has always been more akin to what he's shown in this tournament than what some might expect of him, and especially with this team you could predict that his playing time would mostly be spent on refining offensive possession rather than scoring.

  • Netherlands vs Türkiye (Berlin, 21:00)
  • We didn’t have Hitler in our history though. You can’t compare roman salute with wolf gesture

Turks committed genocide towards Armenians (and are still perpetrating one against Kurds).

Europeans are uncomfortable with the fact that we just exist.

It's not about existence, it's about extremism and authocracy making its way into Europe. I don't think any European looks at Hungary with respect, either.

    Italy also symbolizes wolfs.

Wolves are not correlated, at least in Italy, to paramilitary fascist organisation responsible for war crimes. And, of course, there's always a degree of interpretation: a wolf is a wolf, a wolf salute is a reminder of the violent recent history of Turkey and its accommodation into the reality of "the normal".

I believe Turkey is a wonderful country, but there's definitely better ways to show patriotism than to resort to extremist political affiliation for doing it. Like, I don't know, a Turkish flag?

  • Netherlands vs Türkiye (Berlin, 21:00)
  • the fact that "80% of Turkish people use it for pure Turkish symbol", when it is clearly associated with a paramilitary fascist group, should really make you think about why Turkey isn't looked upon nicely by the EU in general. And I'm frankly surprised that even as a "non right wing Turkish", you still think it's fine to use the symbols that are now widely associated with that political group. I can't think of a world where I, an Italian, would use the Roman salute because it's a "patriotic" salute and because "everyone does it here" (even if a large majority of Italians don't, thank god).

  • I don't think Grohl has played for QotSA in well over a decade now. Their current drummer is Jon Theodore of Mars Volta fame, iirc.

  • Does anyone know why Cristiano Ronaldo started all Portugal matches while he's clearly struggling? I've heard theories about the federation making more money with sponsors if he plays, is this true?
  • could be a whole lot of reasons: he's still the symbol of this Portugal team, after all. He must have a say in the locker rooms (and why shouldn't he, considering); Martinez must think of him as the glue that keeps the squad together (same reason why he must have brought Pepe along, probably). And yeah, probably sponsors too.

  • It's okay, Buddy
  • taught me once and for all that while death might be always near, a fear that's constantly devouring our lives and paralysing them to the point where it feels like our deepest, inner self is a husk shell of what we once were, we can still find the reason of our existence in the joys of living a life that's devoted in equal part to mystery, sensuality, knowledge and wonder. And it says this in the most democratic way you could think: everyone is entitled and deserving of the complexity of life. Oh, and also: it's an absolutely hilarious book to read through.

  • It's okay, Buddy
  • never found Joyce to be pretentious (the man knew what he was doing, and definitely succeeded in doing so) or obtuse (I mean, how many writers you can think of that could pull out the mastery of language and human sensibility out of nowhere like he does). I might be biased because I believe Ulysses saved my life: it's definitely one of the funniest, most touching, humane books I have ever had the pleasure to read. I'd push Ogre to keep up with the good work.

  • Europeans of Lemmy, what places in Europe should foreigners avoid at all cost?
  • aside from the weather (which is nicer in Sicily), it's an archipelago that pretends at all costs to have a relevant European history while offering no way of exploring that history whatsoever. The rampant touristisation of La Valletta has turned it into what's basically an all-ecompassing sprawl of luxury hotels and discos where prices are inflated. I did not have a nice time there and would not go back even if I had the chance.

I recently started another run and I wanted to try a fascist Harry but I guess I'll never have the heart to delude Kim. On the other hand, I started interiorizing Revacholian Nationhood AND Krasmazovian Economics at the same time. Am I building a Nazbol Harry?

How hard is it to build an open source alternative to Duolinguo?

Speaking as a total ignorant from a coding perspective. But I guess that wouldn't be the hard part, considering that most of Duolinguo is just boxes and text inputs. How difficult it is to create a database of competent linguists with an efficient training who can progressively enhance your understanding of languages?

I tried playing the two original Baldur's Gate games on Ubuntu. It's hell.

Long story short: I am absolutely inexperienced with Linux distros but made the switch from Windows a bit more than a year ago. Right now, everyone's talking about Baldur's Gate 3, including a lot of the podcasts and shows I follow: since I never experienced the OG games, I wanted to try them out. They were on sale on GOG, and I had previously set up Lutris so that it interfaced directly with it. But the game refuses to start. Every installation method I tried has miserably failed at some point or another, and when it didn't, the game just won't boot up (either in Lutris or out of it). I'm out of options and I have asked for a refund. Is the situation with the Steam versions any different?Am I missing something? Help!

How is it possible that there's no good music player software for Linux like Musicbee for Windows?

Please stop me if this is not the appropriate place to speak of issues like this one.

I believe an introduction is due. I have been a Ubuntu user for a little more than a year now and while the whole ecosystem is fantastic and smooth to use, it boggles me that there's still no app that can match the versatility and easiness in use that Musicbee provides. Strawberry pales in comparison, foobar2000 is clunky and clumsy, Rhythmbox is really without any option for control over your library... Even Tauon (the most complete music player I have found so far) becomes overly, uselessly complex in certain moments. What's your take on this issue? What do you use for browsing, editing and playing your music collection? Is there any way we'll ever see something like Musicbee on Linux distros?

Oggi esce al cinema in Giappone "How Do You Live?", il nuovo film di Hayao Miyazaki

Con tutta probabilità sarà l'ultimo film del maestro dell'animazione giapponese. Chissà quando lo vedremo in Italia.

[04/07/2023] Cosa state guardando?

[22/06/2023] Cosa state guardando?

What's the best RSS feed out there?

So far all of my experiences with open source RSS feeders have ranged from mediocre to disappointing. Either I have too little control over how the app itself works (Nunti, You Reader) or the interface looks too messy. Feeder looked like a really option but the lack of organization didn't convince me. Are there any other solutions I should try?
