The Hi-Link (beware of fakes) modular switchers work well for simple "ESP8266 + Relay and a couple of LEDs" designs - there's a 5V 3W unit that just has enough headroom and it's very compact. That gives you a black box, PCB mount option.

Replacing the linear elements with switchers means more noise in the power lines. How much more, and whether it's noticeable or tolerable will be down to you.

After 9 days, the upvotes and downvotes are tied so nothing changes for now, but we can revisit later.

Personally, I'd prefer organic growth rather than reposting stuff from Reddit.

The call for designs was open for weeks. This is what came in.

I'm plesantly surprised at the number of voters. I went with this format, instead of what you suggest or a third party voting site, thinking there would only be a handful of replies!
