First time I saw this episode, I thought that headgear was part of their face
  • Very interesting! I had been planning to look up the episode to see for sure, but I forgot to do it.

The pronunciation they ended up going with rolls off the tongue a little easier for me, so maybe that was the reason. I don't remember the first DS9 episode to mention it, but I remembered it being in 2x21 The Wire, so I looked that up. https://www.st-minutiae.com/resources/scripts/441.txt By this point it had been changed to the more common version.

  • First time I saw this episode, I thought that headgear was part of their face
  • I'm pretty sure it never showed up again! This was also the only episode they pronounced kanar as kaynar instead of kuhnar. I'd have to look through the episode to be sure, but I think the Cardassian phasers were also a different color than the orange they were in later appearances.

It's always interesting to see how they change things as they see what works. It does make me wonder what the original pronunciation of kanar was though. Did the actor read it wrong, or did they change it!

  • [Meta] Did we drop the "what are you playing" monthly thread? Also, mods haven't been active for a while, should someone take over?
  • I guess someone else could make a monthly or weekly thread until we see what happens. I generally don't have a lot to say, so I just lurk most of the time. So it's nice to have posts like that to have an excuse to contribute to the conversation!

I decided to start playing The Sims 3 again over the weekend, and I played Morrowind for a few hours as well. Not sure which one will win out for my attention for the next while, I guess we'll see!

  • Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of June 16th
  • After staring at my screen for 45 minutes trying to pick a game for the weekend, I decided to start up The Sims 3 again. Just like always, the addiction is back! It seems like at least once or twice a year I go really hard on it for about a week.

  • Thoughts on Space Games, Part 3: Too Many Tiny Games!
  • Endless Sky has sucked up large chunks of time from me over the years! Definitely recommend it if anyone hasn't tried it yet. I've worked on several mods for it over the years, and that's lots of fun as well.

  • It's almost the week-end, what are you guys going to play?
  • I just finished Star Trek: Resurgence last evening, so I'm now trying to decide what to start next! I'm currently trying to pick from Battletech, Dune: Spice Wars, and Desperados III, or maybe even something else. I'm looking forward to the Steam summer sale, I've got a few more games I've been eyeing up for a while.

  • Thoughts on Space Games, Part 1: Top-5 AAA Games
  • The idea of Eve was always very interesting to me, but I've never tried it. The whole aspect of the massive battles wasn't what I was looking for, I was just interested in the mining and building end of it. I could never tell if I would be able to do that without getting blown up all the time, and never wanted to invest the time in trying it without knowing. I ended up doing something similar in RuneScape. I spent most of the few years I played crafting and selling products and sometimes going on quests.

  • Let's discuss: The Sims
  • That is my primary playstyle in a nutshell! 😂 I really like the painter and writer professions, but I sometimes don't even go that far! I've had sims that have never had a job and have made every simoleon by picking up rocks, playing guitar, and selling random things they found in the dumpsters around town. That's the great thing about it, you get more freedom to do what you want.

  • Let's discuss: The Sims
  • My favorite is the Sims 3, and I've spent a lot of time on it! It's a very addicting game for me, but only by spells. I'll play it every chance I get for a few weeks, then let it sit for a long time. I've also played 2 and 4 as well. 2 was good, and 4 was disappointing to me. The overall gameplay wasn't as good in my opinion, and losing the open world aspect of 3 was a negative too. Add to that the launcher and additional login requirements and I quit playing it fairly quickly.

I think the main reason I like 3 better than the others is because of the open world aspect. I can quickly switch back and forth between two sims at opposite ends of the map, and the world itself feels more real due to not having loading screens. I also like the graphics style a little better, but that's a minor thing.

The way I normally play is to create a sim, either by picking traits or randomizing, and drop them into the world with a starter house. From there I normally have them get a job or learn a freelance skill to make some money. I generally let my sims find their own friends and spouses by finding who they get along with and going from there. I generally get at least a few generations in before I move on to another game or start over. I rarely do the challenges and things that many people do, but I have done games where I tried to keep a generational line going for a while.

I was really looking forward to both Life by You and Paralives, but the publisher and/or devs of Life by You just blew through their third release date, and have now delayed it indefinitely. So maybe Paralives will be good!

    DSLR vs Mirrorless Decision

I don't have a huge amount of money invested so far, and whatever lens type I buy is most likely what I'm going to have to stay with for many years to come. My hard limit would be $1000 for the body, but preferably $700 or less. Since I would like to stay with Canon, that leaves me with the R100, R50, and RP at the very top end. I am open to other options however, especially if there are good aftermarket lenses and accessories. > > Although I know there will still be new and used EF lenses available, I do worry a bit about future camera body upgrade options. DSLR vs Mirrorless Decision

I've started rediscovering photography again after a multi year break, and I've currently got a decision to make. However, I now realize that new DSLR cameras seem to be on their way out and mirrorless is what the major manufacturers are moving to. My question is this. Should I switch to a mirrorless camera before I spend more money on lenses? I don't have a huge amount of money invested so far, and whatever lens type I buy is most likely what I'm going to have to stay with for many years to come. My hard limit would be $1000 for the body, but preferably $700 or less. Since I would like to stay with Canon, that leaves me with the R100, R50, and RP at the very top end. Although I know there will still be new and used EF lenses available, I do worry a bit about future camera body upgrade options. I know I'm overthinking this a bit too much, but I'm just curious what other people think.

Night stages are some of my favorites.

    > It looked like the fans on SS2 were excited to be there! Even watching it at home was great. I'd like to see more rallies with night stages in the future, it certainly adds some uniqueness.

First year fully gaming on Linux.

I saw there was a somewhat similar post to this, but I'm kind of celebrating the fact that this was the first year I was able to game exclusively on Linux! I'm very thankful for all of the effort from the people involved in all of the aspects of Wine/Proton, it's great to not need to reboot to play games.
