Poll - Top Albums of 2023
  • A couple of mine, off the top of my head (in no particular order):

    Honourable mention (non-punk)

  • Poll - Top Albums of 2023

What were your top releases of 2023? Another year is coming to a close, and I thought it might be an idea to compile a list of the top 23 of 2023. It could be either albums released in 2023 or just your top plays of the year. Post your suggestions in the comments below, and I'll add up the votes into a post at the start of January.

It’s time for album club #5! I'm a few days late with this one, and have also decided to switch the format to monthly instead of every 2 weeks. If we start getting more participation I might look at increasing the frequency again.

This week I went with a Canadian classic. D.O.A.'s Hardcore 81. The album that lent it's name to a genre. Released in 1981, this was D.O.A.'s second album. Formed in 1978, by this point in their career the band had already opened for the Clash, and toured extensively around California with some of the other founders of hardcore punk. They would soon lose a drummer to Black Flag, and go through some lineup changes of their own. In the middle of all of that, they released what is likely their best album, Hardcore 81.

This post will stay pinned for a month, in order for anyone interested to leave their thoughts on the album. December 31st will see the launch of Album Club #6.

Album Club #4 - Death Pill - Death Pill (2023) - [Sunday Album Club]

    !

Invidious link to listen for free.

    Buy it on Bandcamp.

It’s time for album club #4! I went with something new this week, the debut album of Ukraine's Death Pill. This album was released in February 2023. "From the classic punk of Black Flag, The Distillers and Circle Jerks, to modern outfits like Axe Rash and the thrash metal of Nervosa and Exodus, there’s a nod to all of this in Death Pill’s visceral sound. Full on and fully formed on their self-titled debut album."

This post will stay pinned for 3 weeks, in order for anyone interested to leave their thoughts on the album. December 3rd will see the launch of Album Club #5.

  • Album Club #3 - Texas Terri and The Stiff Ones - Eat Shit (1997) - [Sunday Album Club]
  • Oh the late 90's. On the one hand, 1997 saw Blink 182's major label debut, Dude Ranch, quickly becoming a hit at frat parties all over North America. Green Day was rabidly pursuing radio rock stardom with nimrod. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes debut, Have A Ball was released, proving that even upper-middle class suburban Karen's could get behind this "punk" thing that all the kids were talking about.

But all was not lost! 1997 also saw releases like The Dwarves are Young and Good Looking. The Beltones had recently released a solid EP. And of course you have the only album released by Texas Terri & The Stiff Ones.

Again, comparisons to Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics are obvious. Both are unapologetic, in your face, rock and roll. Both often included violence, blood, and nudity. At the time, Eat Shit struck me as a middle finger to all the safe, radio friendly pop-punk that was blowing up at the time. This was raw, this was real.

This is the first time I've listened to this album in over a decade and a half, but it's still a fun listen today. Solid 7/10.
