Sorry, Deutsch people
  • Japanese:

Germany - ドイツ (doitsu) - or 独逸 or 独乙 if you're feeling nasty.

Nederlands - オランダ (oranda which comes from the word holland) - 阿蘭陀 and a few other kanji forms exist as well

  • What is the OLDEST online account that you currently still own and still use somewhat frequently?
  • My fark account is old enough to drive in the US. I don't think I really use much of anything that old anymore.

I had facebook from the time when it still required a .edu email, though I quit that. I lost access to my hotmail account years ago after dropping it in favor of gmail. I had IRC accounts going back into the '90s, but I almost never use IRC anymore (and certainly not on those same networks (assuming they even still exist)).

  • We got a gas dryer mistakenly thinking we had a gas line.. we think this is it.. is it???
  • I considered getting a washer that dries but was NOT the heat pump type when I moved to Japan (where most people do not have dedicated clothes driers except in the more inclimate places). The reviews all turned me off. I've heard good things about heat pump driers in general, so I'll maybe consider things again when my current washer dies (hopefully no time soon).

  • Is there a more Transformers style than Bōsōzoku ?
  • Fuck the bosozoku idiots (they drive super unsafely and are loud as fuck), but this also dekotora (decorated truck) and almost certainly an art project as I highly doubt it would be street legal here.

  • Unearthed photo: Teen JD Vance poses with 3 girls at urinals
  • I went from super conservative evangelical, even harder right than my parents in many ways, in high school, very nearly got pulled into even further right stuff in young adulthood, and now am basically the opposite of all of that. Had facebook been a thing when I was that age, who knows what nonsense I would have been spouting or doing.

I despise Vance and all the he and his ilk stand for, but I agree this just doesn't feel right to me.

  • Scientists find humans age dramatically in two bursts – at 44, then 60
  • Actual study: https://www.nature.com/articles/s43587-024-00692-2

We collected longitudinal biological samples from 108 participants over several years, with a median tracking period of 1.7 years and a maximum period of 6.8 years, and conducted multi-omics profiling on the samples.

That's not a lot of people studied for not a lot of time. It feels like the wording in the Guardian article is trying to misrepresent things.

  • How are you different from the stereotypical "average person" in your country?
  • If you mean my country of birth, it's actually a bit difficult since I've been twice in the last ten years and this and some YouTube vids are my only real media consumption. If you mean where I live now, I'm definitely fatter, hairier, and tatooed-ier than the average person. My japanese is definitely a bit worse.

  • "but they sting/bite/are toxic/are icky" blah blah. nature does not owe you safety
  • Paper wasps usually are fine unless you get too close. I opened up the old toolbox on my grandad's tractor (parked outside, lid slightly ajar) as a curious kid. I was greeted by angry buzzing followed swiftly by stinging.

I also have some on the outside of my carport where the roof overhangs a bit. I could harvest my peppers a couple meters below them without issue. Once I got a little close and one did the diving/swooping "sod off" manoeuvre, but otherwise never bothered me. Their nest got taken out by a typhoon a few days ago, however

  • "but they sting/bite/are toxic/are icky" blah blah. nature does not owe you safety
  • As someone who works outside several days in an area with multiple species of wasps, including murder hornets, that would be fantastic. I've not been stung yet, but it's only a matter of time and I might be allergic (I'm allergic to bees, or at least used to be, but I only had light swelling from a paper wasp. Still, I'd rather not find out).

Speaking of, if we could make all my local snakes non-venomous, I would be delighted.

  • "but they sting/bite/are toxic/are icky" blah blah. nature does not owe you safety
  • I wonder how much has been studied about the ability of the other species to proliferate enough to make up and not be eaten out of existence. The mosquitos existing may not be the limiting factor on the population size of other species.
