If you want a set it and forget it distro to never touch his computer again, then consider going a Ublue distro. Aurora (only KDE), or Bazzite (choose the KDE image) if he does gaming.

This is what I do, I enable HDR on:

• My Monitor's menu (hardware)
• Steam Game Mode
• KDE Plasma monitor config (software)
• Game settings

My monitor isn't OLED, so the difference is barely noticeable to me. Even on my Steam Deck OLED, the difference is not big enough for me. It's nice, but I just can't appreciate it as much as others do. However, I do graphic design so the color management aspect is more valuable to me in a work context, just not so much for games.

My kids freaking love it, and family sharing is crazy good. I use it on trips. My other two PCs are running Bazzite.

Yeah Bazzite is great for people that just want an easy to use, set it and forget it system.

Please consider Ghost or Write.as, both are part of the fediverse, support markdown (meaning easy to import content from Lemmy) AND they both support public and paid-for content with ready to use payment gateways.

Which is the image that bundles the proprietary Nvidia driver for your laptop. They don't need to know the exact model, just the generation.

Fedora too, if the users are tech illiterate and they come from Windows it might be worth going for the Kinoite spin. They wouldn't be able to wreck it and the UI would feel more familiar to them.

Yes, while it's vastly better than it was not long ago, there's quite a bit of catching up for them to do. On Bazzite gamemode on Nvidia is quite rudimentary.

However, Nvidia is progressing fast, I bet I'll have no issues with it in the near future.

In my case, I don't hate them. I respect those devs, people have to put food on their tables somehow, and this way isn't one of the worst... I just believe that by doing so, we are helping to perpetuate vicious corporativism.

I didn't feel that way at the time. What I perceived was that they expected me to make more use of my keyboard. I can totally understand why that can look more mobile centric when some features are not overly clear on how to interact with them with a mouse.

Regarding the UI, the padding between elements and overall simplicity or clear space is definitely not for everyone. But it sure is for me. However I understand how other users might want to make more use of their screen real estate. In my case, I just want the UI to focus on the main things I use.

I believe that not fulfilling your natural desires is unhealthy and could prove to be social issue if and when there's a substantial natality problem.

I use Plasma now, but I miss the cohesiveness provided to developer by Gnome's Human Interface Guidelines, the result is a vastly unified design language across core, circle and some other 3rd party apps. Plus, I appreciate that their design language is very simplistic and easy on the eyes. While Plasma tends to be more condensed and explicit even for non primary features, while on GNOME, secondary features tend to be hidden from plain sight.

That said, Plasma has been faster to adopt some gaming and design related features due to their collaboration with Valve and from what I've read in the fediverse, they are more open to other people's opinions.

There were a few Figma mockup leaks that looked FREAKING amazing in these regards, but that mockup has been taken down by KDE and is no longer public. I can't even find screenshots now. If that mockup ever becomes real, I won't miss GNOME at all.

That said, GNOME is freaking amazing, I had an awesome time with it, and it's a perfectly valid option.

At this point, I guess they are either ignorant, unethical, or they are just lying to themselves because they can't resist the temptation to play their games.
