Flash cost Warner Bros. almost $220 million and it was the biggest bomb of the year. Barbie's budget is only $150 million and will very likely become the highest-grossing film of the year.
- Barbie ($70.5M) and Oppenheimer ($33.0M) Combine for Opening Day Grosses Over $100M
Combined the movies are playing like one big blockbuster. Really exciting to see this kind of success. Actually in line to see Barbie now!

Monday AM: Warner Bros/Mattel’s Barbie is coming in $6M higher than expected with $162M after a beautiful Sunday of $43.7M, -9% from Saturday. As we told you, that’s the best opening st…
Friday Miday: Warner Bros.’ Barbie is eyeing $68M-70M today, including last night’s previews, for what’s shaping up to be the best opening of the year with $150M at 4,243 theaters. That would beat the 3-day of Super Mario Bros‘ $146.3M. Some rivals see higher like $165M-$170M but it’s still early and everyone is getting excited. Remember, female skewing movies are very front-loaded (remember a movie called Twilight?).
Universal’s Oppenheimer is certainly not getting scraps: It’s headed for $32M today, including previews, and a $75M 3-day at 3,610 theaters. That’s higher than Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny‘s $60.3M start. Wow.
Do your math, the two titles are fueling $225M alone this weekend.
So far, Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning despite shedding Imax, isn’t taking a horrible hit, -54% in weekend 2 with $25M with a $124.2M running total. Friday is looking like $6.6M.
Angel Studios’ Sound of Freedom at 3,285 is resilient as well with an amazing $20M, -26%, weekend 3 and running total of $124.4M. Disney’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is fifth with an estimated fourth weekend of $7M, -43% and running cume by Sunday of $159.3M.
UPDATED after Thursday exclusive: Warner Bros has made it official that Barbie has collected the best previews of not only this summer but all of 2023 with $22.3M, which bests Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s $17.5M. It’s a great weekend for the house of Zaslav in the wake of The Flash stumbling last month. All eyes are on the Warner Bros Discovery share price which as of this post is around $13.02 (-0.7%).
Meanwhile, Universal says Oppenheimer did $10.5M at 3,150 theaters.
- Weekend Box Office Report July 14 - July 16, 2023
Lots of good stuff, but here's the most impressive:
>On the heels of last week's impressive start, Angel Studios's Sound of Freedom exploded in its second weekend of release by increasing 37.2 percent over last weekend to place in second this weekend with an estimated $27.00 million. This type of second weekend hold is pretty much unheard of at the box office for an already wide release, but Sound of Freedom benefited from a combination of not-so-typical factors this weekend, including exceptional word of mouth (the film received a perfect A+ rating on CinemaScore), expanding to an additional 413 locations this weekend (and holding onto a very high percentage of its average showtimes from last weekend in holdover locations), last weekend's three-day gross having been deflated at least somewhat by the Tuesday midweek opening and by continuing to receive a boost from the film's Pay it Forward ticket program, in which tickets for the film are being purchased online for others to claim tickets for free. It also appears that the Jim Caviezel-led Sound of Freedom has struck a chord with similar audiences that made The Passion of the Christ a break-out performer way back in 2004. Sound of Freedom has grossed an estimated $85.50 million through 13 days of release and isn't showing signs of slowing down anytime soon (as long as the film continues to hold onto locations and showtimes).

- Domestic Box Office 2023 (July 12, 2023)
Got another idea for a graphic so thought I'd post it. I plan to make a worldwide one soon as well. I'll probably update and add a new one every so often. Probably as often as once a week, but likely more like every other week or once a month. Depends how often here people want an update on that info in a clean graphic. So let me know.

The actors' union and the studios agreed to ask a mediator to help facilitate talks. Tensions remained high as a strike threat remained.
Interesting mention of a proposal that a third-party collect streaming data to determine actors competition. Could be pretty good for us casual observers.

Woof. With a 250M dollar budget(aka ~500-650M breakeven), this movie is going to struggle to make even its budget back.

- Indy 5 Prediction Thread?
Hey everybody, how you all feel like Indy 5 is going to perform this weekend? Anybody goes some last minute predictions?
Personally feel like this movie is gonna tank. Apparently the budget for Dial of Destiny over $300m and the last one was so bad. Is anybody asking for more Indiana Jones? I would be surprised if this broke 250 world wide box office.

- Original Analysis: Estimating "The Flash" Domestic & Worldwide Total
Using comps of both Shazam 2 and Black Adam, "The Flash" domestic total is looking to be around $103m-118m.
Using Black Adam dailies from here on out it gets to $129m, but I can't see how it has a run like that based on the second weekend drop The Flash is having (73% vs 59% for Black Adam) and upcoming competition.
Using Shazam: Fury of the Gods dailies it would get to $112m. I have a hard time believing it'll leg out even as well as this, but I'm being conservative here as this is the first time I'm doing my own analysis with the pure data from comp dailies.
Black Adam and Shazam 2 had the same domestic/international split of 43/57%.
The Flash is slightly more international heavy with 41.5/58.5%.
Assuming this split holds that would take the $103m-118m domestic to a worldwide of $250m-290m worldwide final.
