I figure lots of people use Google Messages, so I use that as my default SMS app, figuring I'll at least sometimes be upgraded to RCS with E2EE. But it's still Google.
So what do you think? In terms of privacy, when a contact doesn't use Signal, am I better off with FOSS like QUIK (or something else?) that's always SMS, or Google that's sometimes E2EE?
I'm pro-FOSS in particular because I'm pro-privacy and pro-security, not so much for any other philosophical reasons - respect to you if you feel differently, just wanted to mention that personally I'm most interested in privacy and security arguments.
Anything else I should be thinking about here? (say, spam detection...).
Thank you!

I wanted to share my experience using Claude AI to create a Solitaire game in just a few hours. It was fascinating to see how AI can assist in programming and streamline the development process. I never expected to go from concept to a fully functional game so quickly!
The game captures the classic Solitaire experience with a simple interface and smooth gameplay. Plus, it's open-source, so anyone interested can check out the code and see how it all came together.
Here are the links to try it out:

They are making it harder and harder to do open source/enthusiastic stuff on Android. They are doing exactly opposite of what they were supposed to do. They don't want you to Emulate, Virtuslise or Sideload. It is becoming a degraded version of iOS day by day. Atleast iOS got some AAA games in their arsenal. But what Android has? bloated adwares!
The only game that i liked was The Walking dead S1 and it's no longer available on play store! So i have to sideload it, but you can't do it too because Android will restrict access to /data and /obb folders.
If I'm trying to run Proot Linux distros using termux, Android will kill the process.
People chose Android because it had the freedom to do whatever the user wants. I don't know what is the purpose of the new high-end Android phone when it'll just run Instagram and YouTube. We will utilise nothing from our devices. Android doesn't have good games on their platform either.

While debloating my Motorola Edge 50 Fusion(No root, Hello Moto OS), I uninstalled a package called "com.motorola.coresettingsext" which was defined as the following on the GUI:
\"Safe to remove(No Bootloop) but it's usefulness remains unknown\"
As mentioned, there was no bootloop and everything seemed fine until I noticed that my refresh rate was locked at 90hz. This was strange because this device came with a 144hz refresh rate and moreso because in the sources that I had looked at while researching for a phone, 90hz was never an option to begin with.
I went over to Settings>Display to manually adjust the refresh rate but that option was nowhere to be seen. That's when I started restoring/enabling each package I had previously uninstalled only to notice that this "com.motorola.coresettingsext" not only removed the option from the Display settings, it also got rid of "Flicker Prevention" under the "Eye Protection" subsection and "Screen Record" from the "General" subsection.
I don't know how to reach the dev directly so I thought I'd make a post here to help out anyone else suffering from the same problem as me. I have flaired this post as "Application Support" just in case this catches their eye.
Hope it helps!
Edit: u/WhoRoger mentions that disabling this completely removes the sound and vibration section from the settings menu on G34 devices as well so watch out for that.

The original was posted on /r/fossdroid by /u/JustMadeAcc2SayThis on 2024-07-29 00:58:59+00:00. *** It’s great seeing the Android community increasingly recognizing and recommending FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) applications! Personally, I downloaded my first FOSS app about four years ago. As a regular user, I’ve noticed an increase in the popularity of these alternatives, and here’s how I see it compared to apps available on the Play Store.
Play Store ==========
To be fair – these issues don’t apply to every Play Store app or developer, but they’re common:
- Clunky, buggy, and inefficient
- Annoying and intrusive advertisements
- Trackers and loggers collecting your data (I have seen apps with almost 20)
- Paid apps lacking innovation or unique features, offering little value compared to free alternatives
- Potentially malicious apps
- Apps that “go rogue,” starting off normal but later updated with malicious features
- Apps that do not contain age-restricted content that require users to input their age range to continue usage
- Required account creation when unnecessary
- Play Store itself requires an account
FOSS ====
These characteristics aren’t exclusive to every FOSS app or developer, but they often feature:
- Minimal, fast, and efficient
- Minimal or no dependencies, using libraries when necessary (and only external libraries and frameworks when absolutely necessary)
- Lightweight design (apps strive to constantly minimize size and it’s not uncommon to see an app 100KB in size)
- Low or basically zero battery impact
- Minimal or no internet connection required, with option to download data for offline (and no internet permission when unnecessary)
- Clean, intuitive user interface
- Material Design 3 (Material You), with dynamic theming (dynamic color) and has a themed icon
- Option to choose between light or dark themes, or even follow system theme, with high contrast/black theme for AMOLED screens
- Quick to adopt new Android features (like predictive back gesture)
- Import and export of data and settings, which might even work across different apps
- Use of alternative data sources, instances, or APIs (even your own)
- Different developers can contribute to improve an app or fork it if the original dev stops supporting it
- No account needed to get apps from repositories like F-Droid or IzzyOnDroid, or from code hosting platforms like GitHub or GitLab
The big difference seems to be in the motivations behind the apps. Many Play Store apps feel like they’re just trying to milk users for money or data, while FOSS apps are created by developers who are genuinely passionate about their work. They often build these apps because they see a need for features that just aren’t out there yet.
I don’t mean to bash any developers or make their apps feel inadequate; there are many creators on either side doing great work. However, we really owe a lot to the open source devs who put in countless hours and face tons of frustrations just to share their creations with us. They’re dedicated to fixing issues, adding useful features, and maintaining their projects. Make sure to support these app developers!
