We may be anonymous strangers on the internet, but we have one thing in common. We may be a world apart, but we’re here together!

Welcome to the 24 hour pledge! I’m pledging myself to not drinking today, and invite you to do the same.

Maybe you’re new to c/stopdrinking and have a hard time deciding what to do next. Maybe you’re like me and feel you need a daily commitment or maybe you’ve been sober for a long time and want to inspire others.

It doesn’t matter if you’re still hung over from a three day bender or been sober for years, if you just woke up or have already completed a sober day. For the next 24 hours, lets not drink alcohol!

  • Hi! I wanted to document my new journey here. Hope you don't mind!

I've been drinking quite a bit since I was 21. I'm now in my mid 40's and COVID really pushed me over the edge - lots of day drinking. I've tried to stop drinking a number of times now, but the most I usually ever made it was a couple days or at most a week. I got to the point where I think I was getting on the edge of DT's when I tried to stop sometimes. I made it a few weeks (not consecutively) this summer. I slipped the week before last and was drinking quite a bit from about 10AM/2PM until I passed out later in the evenings. On Monday (July 24) I thought I'd try to stop again. I quit drinking sometime in the early afternoon. I wasn't feeling too bad when I went to bed, but then I started to feel the dread/doom creeping over me. I spent the night not being able to sleep and feeling like I was going to die until about 2AM when I felt I had to break into my "emergency stash" I had gotten in case this were to happen. I drank 3/4 of bottle of wine by 4AM Tuesday morning and felt I'd see what would happen. I was able to fall asleep for a few hours. I woke up later that morning and worked, did my normal routine for Tuesday. That night I had the same experience, but it wasn't quite as bad. I couldn't sleep and still felt the impending doom, but I managed not to drink any. I held strong on Wednesday, and was actually able to get a good night's sleep (thank goodness!). Now it's Thursday. I was feeling pretty good which of course my brain was telling "just a few drinks tonight won't hurt anything". I was able to ward it off though and I'm looking forward to another good night of sleep tonight! Stay strong friends!

  • Coming up on 1000 days no alcohol.

Title says it all! I am healthier than I've been in 20 years. I sleep well, I wake early. I get shit done. I miss the party. But, not the hangovers. And, with all that beer money I have bought myself a whole bunch of fancy new music gear!

    Stay strong. Alcohol is garbage.

  • The bar ran out of NA beer

I view it as a good sign that the local bar of where I'm staying ran out of NA beer. I only had two, so it wasn't my fault.

It's good to know I'm not the only sobernaught around.

Time has gone by so fast! I struggled so hard at the beginning, not just by the day, but by the hour. It DOES get easier. Waking up each morning without the stress of reading the horrors of the night before is a feeling I never thought I would achieve. 💜

  • My Story

Hiyah! My name is Andrew and I’m a recovering alcoholic. My 2 year sobriety anniversary is coming up next month.

I started drinking when I was around 14 years old and was really just a social thing. When I was in my mid 20’s I realized I had a problem. When I turned 30 I started to really try on my own but I’d loose track and not pay attention enough to see how much I was drinking. At that time I was drinking 750ml a day basically. It took me years but I quit for good when I was 32.

It took me about a year to finally get some traction with my sobriety. At first I would make it a day, then maybe a week, back to a day, to a week, etc. what helped me the most at first to find the courage to tell a few people. My wife had known but I hadn’t shared that side of me with any of my friends or family. I finally decided to tell some friends and, not to my surprise, they had known I struggled but they were so supportive and generous to help and felt honored that I felt comfortable sharing with them.

I’ve never gone to AA (not that I have anything against it) or support groups. I did meet with a therapist for 9 months or so and stopped following up. I’d love to go back to him but healthcare sucks where I am.

It’s still a journey and I my no means have the impression that I’ve mastered this but things are so much better than they were. I still have bad days that make me want to drink just one - today is one of them actually - but tomorrow I’ll wake up sober and hopefully in a better mood.

Moral of the story for anyone lurking and thinking about quitting is to find some support. Good support. If you don’t have any responsible friends that you can really trust to go on this journey with you, reach out to people in this community, find a therapist you feel comfortable with or go to AA or support group near you.

It really is worth it, I promise. You’ll be amazed at what things change in your life because of it. It’s so worth it.
