The USWNT take the field for the first time in 2024.
The United States Women’s National Team finally are set to take the field. Tonight, they play in their first ever W Gold Cup match when they take on the Dominican Republic. It’s the first chance of the year to show that the team has improved from a tumultuous 2023 that saw them have their worst ever finish in the Women’s World Cup and has seen a coaching change and the departure of a few legends.

The team they bring to the W Gold Cup is one that still has some legends, but the future core of the USWNT has also started to appear on this team. The hope is that a mix of youth and veteran leadership can be the perfect cocktail to claim the title. However, they still have to play the games, and standing in their way tonight is the Dominican Republic. They are in a position they have never been before, beating Guyana on Saturday to make it to their first major tournament. They’ve upset everyone to get here, and they don’t want to stop now that the #2 team in the world is lining up opposite them.

It makes for an interesting first night for the USWNT as we begin the W Gold Cup.

Lineups

**United States lineup: **

**Dominican Republic lineup: **

How to Watch

**Advertised Kick-off Time: **10:15pm Eastern, 8:15pm Pacific

**Venue: **Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson

**Available TV: **ESPN Deportes (Spanish)

**Available streaming: **Paramount+ (English), CBS Sports Golazo (English), ESPN+ (Spanish), FuboTV (Free Trial)

This thread will be your match thread. The W Gold Cup begins!
The 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup is here! The tournament begins tonight at Dignity Health Sports Park with Group A action, and the first match pits Mexico against Argentina. Mexico is a team that has the talent to take the leap to the next level, and it feels like they are ready to make that leap.

Mexico had the disappointment of missing out on the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Olympics in a tournament that they hosted (the 2022 Conacacaf W Championship), so now they have been building for their next opportunity. This is the knock of that opportunity, so La Tri is hoping to take advantage and make some noise in this group.

Argentina is one of the invited South American teams who can be very dangerous. They’re also going through a bit of transition, but much of the team that surprised many at the Women’s World Cup is back to try and bring the W Gold Cup home with them. These two teams could be battling the USWNT for the top 2 spaces in the group, which could make this opening match one of the most tense in the group stage.

How to watch

Mexico vs. Argentina

Location: Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson

Kick-off time: 7:30pm Eastern, 4:30pm Pacific

**Available TV: **ESPN Deportes (Spanish)

**Available streaming: **Paramount+ (English), CBS Sports Golazo (English), ESPN+ (Spanish), FuboTV (Free Trial)

This thread will be your match thread. 2024 W Gold Cup: Potential Breakout Stars

Photo by Justin Setterfield - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images

Which players could hit new heights at the tournament?
The inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup is set to kick off, providing a new international tournament to crown a regional champion. The eight best Caribbean, North American, and Central American teams are joined by four invitees from South America based on their respective finishes at the 2022 Copa América Femenina. The competition provides an opportunity for glory, different opposition, and, for some participants, additional meaningful matches in advance of the summer’s Olympic Games.

While scouting, player evaluation, and even deal-making have entered the digital age, there is still some value in stepping up at major tournaments. A strong performance can vault a talent into a new stratosphere of transfer interest or alter the tenor of existing negotiations. The stars of tomorrow could shift from being high-potential prospects into key figures, while other headliners can further familiarize themselves to a growing audience.

Here are some potential breakout players to watch at the newest international tournament.

Group A

Jaedyn Shaw - United States

Following the World Cup, the San Diego Wave teenager was brought into the USWNT fold and has already scored two goals in friendlies against Colombia and China. A National Women’s Soccer League Best XI selection, she is a fluid talent who can line up at striker, winger, and attacking midfielder, displaying “creativity, vision, and versatility on the ball” with incisive passing and tricky dribbling. With Sophia Smith expected to shoulder the primary scoring burden, there exists a need for a secondary option, substitute, and rotational starter. Boasting an ability to create for herself and others, her utility should only increase during international tournament play, which can take on a more cagey, static nature than at the club level.

There's no cookin' like home cookin'...@JaedynShaw11 puts the #USWNT on top in her hometown! pic.twitter.com/TjfrM8poj3— U.S. Women's National Soccer Team (@USWNT) December 6, 2023

Dalila Ippólito - Argentina

The 21-year-old was one of the younger members of the squad at the most recent World Cup, her second, and picked up two appearances. She has spent the past few years in Italy and is now on the books at Pomigliano, displaying strong dribbling and “a very good individual technique” with what is described as a “colorful game.” The creative midfielder looks to force the issue with a constant vertical drive and relentless energy, complemented by hard work on defense and a low center of gravity that enables her to absorb contact during solo runs. While the end result can at times go wanting, her baseline skill of advancing possession into the final third at the very least shifts the balance and puts the team in a more advantageous position.

Natalia Mauleón - Mexico

The diminutive América attacking midfielder can be an absolute terror in the final third with a complete arsenal of skill that includes long shooting, tricky dribbling, and cross conversion. She has both the agility to beat opponents in close quarters and win races to claim long balls that go over the top, breaking out on the counter-attack. Her role with **El Tri **gradually increased over the past year, picking up regular minutes during Gold Cup qualifying and finding the back of the net in a 3-0 victory over Puerto Rico.

Cae el tercero de @TigresFemenil

Lizbeth Jacqueline Ovalle – Mexico

The Tigres attacker was reportedly on the transfer wish list for Manchester United, although she remains in the domestic league for now. Her three goals at the 2023 Pan American Games, including a brace in a 2-0 victory over Argentina, proved crucial during the campaign that resulted in a gold medal. A dynamic and dangerous winger, **Total Football Analysis **cites her “excellent dribbling, shooting skill, and ability to provide key passes” while being capable of lining up on both sides of the formation. The 24-year-old can find the back of the net from seemingly anywhere within 35 yards of net, whether darting through opposing lines or launching a shot from distance.

Group B

Beatriz “Bia” Zaneratto - Brazil

While a 30-year-old veteran of four World Cups with over 100 caps could hardly be a “breakout” star, the recently signed Kansas City Current striker has the ability to further introduce herself to the American audience ahead of her debut NWSL season. She is praised as a “strong, fast attacker who strikes the ball” and has “improved her technique” over time. In addition to an accurate long-distance shot, the forward can play with her back to the goal and also get behind the opposing back line with pace. With Marta off of the roster for the Gold Cup, the versatile Paulista might have to step up to shoulder some of the attacking burden.

Aline Gomes - Brazil

Enjoying a meteoric rise from playing futsal on the streets of Tabatinga three years ago, the Ferroviária attacker contributed 23 goals and five assists in 2023, helping her club claim the Copa Paulista and being honored with a bevy of individual awards, including the Bola de Ouro (Golden Ball), Best Striker, and Revelation of the Year. The 18-year-old wide player is praised for “the way she takes players on” and “uses space,” serving as “a threat on the flanks.” She has an almost unthinkable level of control with the ball, making quick cuts and slaloming through the opponent while also possessing a high level of speed and intelligent vision on crosses. As evidenced by the league record, her finishing is strong, even willing to serve as a target option in the box.

Tarciane - Brazil

The towering six-foot centre-back has claimed three domestic titles and two Copa Libertadores, now receiving the opportunity to compete at the international level for her former Corinthians manager, Arthur Elias. She is praised as “a decisive goal scoring defender in classics,” managing to step up in the biggest fixtures, particularly as a target on set pieces. With a contract that ends at the end of the year, foreign clubs are likely keeping an eye on the 2022 U-20 World Cup’s Bronze Ball honoree, who is a dominant physical presence in the defensive half with a surprisingly deft touch to avoid pressure. While long-distance passing accuracy and turnovers when moving forward can be an issue, her overall contribution and one-on-one shutdowns are an overwhelming net positive.

After a single season at the University of Arizona, the Texas-born defender joined Atlético Nacional and made 24 appearances for Los Verdolagas (The Purslanes). She has excellent recovery speed and takes good angles when in pursuit of the opponent, calmly shepherding the ball out of danger. Her full-field distribution is composed and accurate, picking out teammates across the width of the formation. As an additional asset, the 20-year-old has a penchant for goal-line stops, fearlessly heading away shots.

Group C

Jade Rose - Canada

Due to an injury, the Harvard centre-back missed her opportunity to shine at last summer’s World Cup. However, she rebounded from the disappointment and became a favorite of the manager during the fall, shutting down Sam Kerr and setting up a goal in a friendly against Australia. Her athleticism and general composure are noted assets, particularly when handling one-on-one opportunities and denying the opponent’s counter-attacks. A three-time Young Player of the Year has perhaps already enjoyed her breakout, but the Gold Cup should be a true moment to shine for the amateur after missing out on the bigger stage last summer.

Olivia Smith - Canada

A late addition to the World Cup squad, the Sporting Clube midfielder has enjoyed a fantastic start to her first professional season with eight goals in 16 appearances across all competitions. Manager Bev Priestman describes her as a “fearless, confident, dynamic big talent” with a “bit of a rocket,” scoring in the U-20 side at a rate akin to the legendary Christine Sinclair. The 19-year-old from North York is as advertised and finishes in a plethora of ways, serving as a prolific target in the box or creating her own opportunities with pace and tight movements. She can also distribute with razor-sharp passes at all distances, taking advantage of the openings created by overeager defenders attempting to step to her or launching ambitious through balls from her own half.

#FutFemSCP | Que momento de Olivia Smith #SCPVGFC // 1-0 pic.twitter.com/yWDIYAliDV— Sporting CP Futebol Feminino (@FutFemSCP) February 3, 2024

Limpia Fretes - Paraguay

During the winter transfer window, the fullback had her move to Grêmio called off following the departure of a coach but was quickly snapped up by Cruzeiro. The 23-year-old is a modern player who constantly pushes forward and scores at a productive rate but still manages to fulfill the position’s traditional responsibilities of pass interceptions, successful aerial duels, vertical distribution, crossing, and aggressive challenges. Despite her relatively diminutive stature, she is a willing and dangerous target in the box on attacking and defensive set pieces, often lining up in the centre-back role. While her future is on the wing, the manifold skills and above-average athleticism make her a versatile talent who should have a long-term future with the national team.

Dahiana Bogarín - Paraguay

Colo-Colo has claimed consecutive Chilean Campeonato Nacional Fútbol Femenino titles, and the versatile 23-year-old midfielder is a key reason as to why, contributing three goals and three assists in 19 appearances. Her exploits earned the Best Foreigner of the Year award after shining as a six, centre-back, and libero, shutting down opponents and serving as a key link-up option. She has elusive ball control with “a great repertoire of dribbling and precise long passes,” enabling her to take control of proceedings. When pushing into the final third, her long-distance shooting and aerial abilities can punish the opponent, particularly when having space to place her attempts into the corner.

⚽ ¡Gol de María Paula Salas!

    @fedefutbolcrc pone el marcador 2-0 a favor. | #CWC pic.twitter.com/KhU5bsonzr— Concacaf W (@ConcacafW) July 5, 2022

María Paula Salas - Costa Rica

The 21-year-old forward bounced around a bit during her young career but appears to have found the ideal environment after landing at Atlas, banging in goals for Las Rojinegras (The Red-and-Blacks). Evident of her streaky scoring abilities, she found the back of the net seven times against Saint Kitts and Nevis in the midst of torrid production in Liga MX Femenil. Her best work is done at close range when finding space as a fox in the box; although, distribution and playing teammates in behind are also skills, particularly when given time to make decisions on the counter-attack.

Alexandra Pinell - Costa Rica

As expressed in Spanish colloquialism, the Alajuelense midfielder is un crack** **with creative dribbling moves and a penchant for long-distance goals, evidenced by stunning finishes at the 2022 U-20 World Cup and in Gold Cup qualifying. She has racked up domestic titles at the club level, developing into a key player for Las Manudas, which resulted in inclusion on last summer’s World Cup squad. The 21-year-old from San Carlos generates a ton of power behind the ball, which also proves useful when playing long passes to streaking attackers in transition. Observers have praised her “speed, game-reading skills, and powerful shot,” although her apparent talent has yet to generate an international transfer.

⚽ ¡Golazo de Victoria Sánchez!

    @fesfut_sv se ponía 2-0 arriba con ese gol. El marcador al 60' es 3-2 a favor.#CWU20 #WeBelong pic.twitter.com/wFHbfukN1c— Concacaf W (@ConcacafW) March 5, 2022

Victoria Meza - El Salvador

One of the Central American program’s “most promising” players, the Texas State holding midfielder contributed three goals and four assists in 15 appearances last fall for the Bobcats after spending time with Alianza and a speculated move to Pachuca failed to materialize. She is a complete player with aggressive tackles, fantastic leaping ability to claim headers, smooth dribbling, a ripping shot, and astounding passing vision with the accuracy to accomplish her designs. In addition to her skill, the 19-year-old with a team-first mentality is a hard worker who is willing to perform thankless tasks in order to claim possession or extend opportunities. Manager Eric Acuña is credited with improving her “techniques and movements” on the field, increasing the tactical understanding of the versatile player who can also line up at striker and on the back line.

Brenda Cerén - El Salvador

With her hat trick in the 3-1 playoff round victory against Guatemala, the 25-year-old Atlas attacker demonstrated her intent to take over matches. She is a dynamic, versatile forward who can operate in isolation on the wing or fight for headers in the box. **Total Football Analysis **notes her intuitive nature, moving into the correct areas and opening up space for teammates and reading opposing back lines. Her distribution is also an asset, on display when pinging in crosses or slipping passes into the open areas created by the gravitational pull that draws defenders out of position toward impactful players.

**Which players do you think will break out at the Gold Cup? Let us know in the comment section. **

Canada should be considered a tournament favorite.
The final group at the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup features three in-region opponents and one guest nation from CONMEBOL. Not only is Canada expected to finish atop the standings, but the United States Women’s National Team’s chief rival should also put in a stern challenge for the title. While Costa Rica appears the likely runner-up on paper, Paraguay and El Salvador could provide a stern test in the pressure cooker of tournament play. All six matches will be held at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas, the only part of the competition being contested outside of Southern California.

Schedule

Thursday, February 22nd** **

Costa Rica vs. Paraguay – 6:15 p.m. Eastern, 3:15 p.m. Pacific

Canada vs. El Salvador – 9:00 p.m. Eastern, 6:00 p.m. Pacific

Sunday, February 25th** **

Paraguay vs. Canada – 5:00 p.m. Eastern, 2:00 p.m. Pacific

El Salvador vs. Costa Rica – 8:00 p.m. Eastern, 5:00 p.m. Pacific

Wednesday, February 28th** **

Canada vs. Costa Rica – 6:00 p.m. Eastern, 3:00 p.m. Pacific

Paraguay vs. El Salvador – 9:00 p.m. Eastern, 6:00 p.m. Pacific

Canada

Coming off of a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics, hopes were high heading into the World Cup, but a disastrous exit in the group stage left some questioning the direction of the program amid reports of other issues. Emerging victorious from the Gold Cup would go long ways to quell the doubters and signal a potential return to prominence. Bev Priestman named a strong roster dabbled with the usual mix of National Women’s Soccer League and European-based standouts. Without the presence of talismanic attacker Christine Sinclair, new leaders will have to step up both on and off the field.

FIFA Ranking: 10

Recent Record: Following the World Cup, Canada took down Jamaica on aggregate (4-1) in the CONCACAF Olympic playoff. The team compiled a 3-1-0 record in friendlies with international series against Brazil (0-1, 2-0) and Australia (5-0, 1-0).

Odds of Winning Group: Favorite

Nigeria forcing a corner as Kailen Sheridan records her first save of the match pic.twitter.com/BwUXMK6EZH— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) July 21, 2023

One to Watch: Some believe Kailen Sheridan to be the top goalkeeper in the world, an opinion with which few can disagree. The 28-year-old San Diego Wave number one is a fantastic shot-stopper with excellent range who possesses the bravery to charge at attackers when necessary. She constantly has the ball at her feet and excels as a long- and short-range passer, expertly breaking the press with her distribution. Coaches praise her “athleticism, dynamism, ability to protect the goal area on crosses, and incredible presence” as reasons why the opposition “fears” the complete talent.

Costa Rica

Over the past year, **Las Ticas **have done the bare minimum expected of a good program by beating and losing to the respective expected foes: the weaker opponents were handled and sometimes demolished, while participation at the World Cup led to a winless exit. After two cycles with Amelia Valverde in charge, Benito Rubido is tasked with getting over the hump, although his debut run at the Pan American Games resulted in disappointment. The roster has talent and goal-scoring prowess, but the finishing seems to disappear on the big stages – nevertheless, hope springs eternal for the attacking core at the newest international competition.

FIFA Ranking: 43

Recent Record: Following the World Cup, Costa Rica limped to a sixth-place finish at the Pan American Games with a draw against Argentina (0-0), a loss to the United States U-19 National Team (1-3), and a tie with Bolivia (0-0), which was capped off by a defeat by Paraguay (1-3). Gold Cup qualification went slightly better with a top of the table finish in League A Group C, splitting results with Haiti (0-1, 2-1) and blitzing Saint Kitts and Nevis (11-0, 19-0) to secure advancement on goal differential. A pre-tournament friendly with the Seattle Reign ended in a loss (0-2).

Odds of Winning Group: In the Running

María Paula Salas con el triplete ¡Goleadora indomable! pic.twitter.com/MjDsLfefjT— TD Más (@tdmas_cr) November 14, 2021

One to Watch: Atlas striker María Paula Salas is a streaky goal scorer with reckless abandon when given the opportunity, including converting seven finishes against Saint Kitts and Nevis. The 21-year-old from San Ramón already bagged a hat trick for her new squad in Liga MX Femenil. She is the ideal target striker with a keen sense of finding space, a magnetism to the ball, and strong distribution to play in onrushing teammates. The attacker will also pull the trigger from long distance, but her main danger area is from within a few yards of the net.

Paraguay

La Albirroja (The White and Red) came devastatingly close to qualifying for a first-ever World Cup but fell to Panama (1-0) on a late goal in the Group C final of the inter-confederation playoffs. The program has a reasonable amount of talent available, although several of the key contributors are approaching the latter stage of their respective careers. Experienced manager Antônio Carlos Bona has been focused on tactical work in preparation for the Gold Cup, which should pair well with a spirited group that plays on the front foot with pace and directness. As expected of aggressive teams, defending in transition can be a weakness that will need to be shored up to reach the next level.

FIFA Ranking: 50

Recent Record: Paraguay clinched a fifth-place finish at the Pan American Games with a loss to Chile (0-1), a thrashing of Jamaica (10-0), and a setback against Mexico (1-4) before defeating Costa Rica (3-1) in the placement stage. Recently hosted friendlies with Russia resulted in a defeat and a draw (0-3, 1-1).

Odds of Winning Group: In the Running

#MiranaUnPoco¡ , ! |

One to Watch: Levante Las Palmas attacker Jessica “Pirayú” Martínez is a dynamic winger who can score from short and long distances, whether pouncing in the box or drilling a shot from well outside of the box. The 24-year-old has racked up the goals for the national team, particularly during past editions of the Copa América Femenina. Described as “the pride of Paraguayan football”she drives proceedings forward with pace and tenacity while also willing to get into physical battles with opposing defenders.

El Salvador

While this is the first major tournament qualification for La Selecta, the program has quietly been trending in the right direction, including a bronze-medal finish at last summer’s Central American and Caribbean Games. Manager Eric Acuña has coached multiple age groups and taken an active role in the building of the country’s growth. He has worked to enhance the roster with “players of all categories” and head into the Gold Cup having done the “adequate administrative work” that can sometimes be a tough balancing act for international competition. Instead of tailoring his tactics to the opponent, he focuses on “the functioning of [his] team and being increasingly virtuous to undermine the rival.”

FIFA Ranking: 104

Recent Record: In Gold Cup qualifying, El Salvador romped through League B Group B with a 6-0-0 record, doubling up on wins against Martinique (9-1, 2-0), Nicaragua (3-0, 4-1), and Honduras (1-0, 5-0). A ticket to the final tournament was punched with a victory over Guatemala (3-1).

Odds of Winning Group: Dark Horse

¡GOLAZO de Brenda Cerén para abrir el marcador para El Salvador ante Guatemala! pic.twitter.com/9ZvHDgZNAY— W Gold Cup (@GoldCup) February 18, 2024

One to Watch: Atlas attacker Brenda Cerén cuts in from the wing with pace and tight control, looking to break toward the goal or hit an accurate cross. She is dangerous with either foot and will also press the opposing back line with dogged determination, also willing to fight for headers in the box. **Total Football Analysis **praises her “spatial awareness and recognition of when to move forward” along with “control of the tempo of play” when operating in a creative role. Her hat trick clinched the 3-1 victory over Guatemala in the playoff round.

**Which teams do you think will emerge from Group C? Let us know in the comment section. **

The reigning champions of South America look to rule another continent.
For the enjoyment of the neutral viewer, Group B at the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup might be the most interesting experience. Brazil is the dominant program in South America with eight Copa América Femenina titles and should travel deep into the current tournament despite being under the stewardship of a recently hired manager. However, Panama, Colombia, and Puerto Rico are hardly shrinking violets and will provide stiff competition, having survived the rigors of respective qualifying campaigns. With the potential of up to three spots in the knockout stage up for grabs, expect this quartet of teams to provide a trio of quarterfinalists.

Schedule

Wednesday, February 21st

Panama vs. Colombia – 7:30 p.m. Eastern, 4:30 p.m. Pacific

Brazil vs. Puerto Rico – 10:15 p.m. Eastern, 7:15 p.m. Pacific

Saturday, February 24th** **

Puerto Rico vs. Panama – 7:30 p.m. Eastern, 4:30 p.m. Pacific

Colombia vs. Brazil – 10:15 p.m. Eastern, 7:15 p.m. Pacific

Tuesday, February 27th

Colombia vs. Puerto Rico – 7:00 p.m. Eastern, 4:00 p.m. Pacific

Brazil vs. Panama – 10:15 p.m. Eastern, 7:15 p.m. Pacific

Brazil

Following a disappointing group stage exit at the 2023 World Cup, Pia Sundhage departed the manager role and was replaced by Arthur Elias. The high-flying tactician won four Copa Libertadores with Corinthias and has suggested an overhaul of the previous strategy with a greater reliance on the holistic team picture. While many of the veterans are present, there is a conspicuous absence of quite a few names, notably Marta. This tournament will show whether the Seleção (National Squad) is ready to turn the page or if star power will be necessary at the Olympics.

FIFA Ranking: 11

Recent Record: Following the World Cup, Brazil embarked on a series of friendlies and compiled a 3-2 record. Series with Canada (1-0, 0-2) and Japan (4-3, 0-2) ended in split results before the year concluded with a victory at home against Nicaragua (4-0).

Odds of Winning Group: Favorite

One to Watch: Four-time World Cup veteran Beatriz “Bia” Zaneratto made the jump to the National Women’s Soccer League after spending her 17-year career in the domestic league and Asia, joining the Kansas City Current. She is a streaky goal scorer with “creativity in and around the box,” praised as a “world-class forward.” An intriguing combination of size and speed, she is equally comfortable as a hold-up player and chasing balls behind the back line.

Panama

After qualifying for the first World Cup in program history, Las Canaleras (The Canal Girls) are looking to build momentum and continue the successful run. Manager Ignacio Quintana acknowledged that the team struggled during the competition but seeks to return in three years having endured novice issues and a limited roster pool. While qualifying for the Olympics wasn’t in the cards, success at the Gold Cup would signify that the Central American nation has the talent to be a consistent threat in CONCACAF. The roster is composed of players based in the domestic league and talents from abroad, including two in Europe and four who are spread across the United States.

FIFA Ranking: 55

Recent Record: Following the World Cup, Panama finished atop the League A Group B in Gold Cup qualifying with a 2-1-1 record. The series was split with Guatemala (3-0, 2-3), but a win and a draw against Jamaica (2-1, 1-1) secured a spot in the tournament.

Odds of Winning Group: In the Running

⚽️ ¡GOLAAAAZOOOOO DE PANAMÁ! ¡¡EL PRIMERO EN LA HISTORIA DE LOS MUNDIALES!!

One to Watch: Creative Tijuana midfielder Marta “Keky” Cox scored the most famous goal in program history at the World Cup, blasting her 35-yard free kick into the back of the net against France. The 26-year-old has 11 international finishes and shows no signs of slowing down. She takes an advanced role in the formation but still drops deep “to aid in progressing the ball forward” while also “making bursting runs to attack the back line.” Ambidextrous long-range shooting remains her specialty, catching multiple Liga MX Femenil goalkeepers out of position.

Colombia

Las Chicas Superpoderosas (The Powerpuff Girls) reached the quarterfinal round of the World Cup for the first time in 2023, losing to eventual runners-up England, 2-1. With three second-place finishes in the Copa América Femenina, the program has comfortably established understudy status in South America behind Brazil, but this Gold Cup provides the opportunity to send a shot across the bow. Former assistant Ángelo Marsiglia was appointed to an interim role following Nelson Abadía’s much-discussed tenure and is said to have garnered some measure of support from the players. He was able to secure several key members of the talent pool for the competition, although Chelsea attacker Mayra Ramírez is a notable absence.

FIFA Ranking: 23

Recent Record: Following the World Cup, Colombia played in a pair of friendly series against the United States and New Zealand. The first matches resulted in a scoreless draw and loss (0-0, 0-3), and the latter two ended 2023 with another scoreless draw and a victory (0-0, 1-0) in Bogotá.

Odds of Winning Group: In the Running

¡¡ DEL MADRID!!

One to Watch: Electric Real Madrid winger Linda Caicedo played in three World Cups last year and racked up a bevy of honors, including Goal of the Tournament and the Golden Girl award given to the top Europe-based footballer under the age of 21. Her dribbling is brilliant, the shooting deadly, and the touch sublime, all paired with speed that makes her a nightmare match-up for defenders. In addition to her individual attributes, she is an excellent creator and link-up player with outstanding passing and a constant desire to get involved.

Puerto Rico

Counting the 1998 CONCACAF W Championship and a few subregional competitions, this Gold Cup is only the second major tournament entrance in program history. Las Boricuas have the opportunity to gain crucial experience against top competition ahead of what could be a propitious World Cup qualifying campaign. University of California, Riverside manager Nat González pulls double duty at the collegiate and international levels after being appointed to lead the squad in September of 2021. The roster is a mix of international players and American university talents, a group that has already matched the win total from last year.

FIFA Ranking: 103

**Recent Record: **In the qualifying tournament, Puerto Rico finished at second place in League A Group A behind Mexico. Two losses to **El Tri **(1-2, 0-3) were offset by a win and a draw against Trinidad and Tobago (2-1, 0-0). A ticket to the final competition was booked with a victory (1-0) over 2023 World Cup participants Haiti.

Odds of Winning Group: Dark Horse

¡Sydney Martínez ataja el penal de Mondésir y mantiene la ventaja para Puerto Rico! pic.twitter.com/irE5g6ys94— W Gold Cup (@GoldCup) February 18, 2024

One to Watch: Former University of South Florida Bull Sydney Martinez closed out her five-year collegiate career with 25 shutouts in 78 appearances. The six-foot-tall goalkeeper complements her long frame with “good lateral movement” and “aggressively fights for balls.” Most recently on the books at IK Grand Bodø in Norway, she is strong and active when coming off of her line to handle crosses, catching the ball at a high point. Her steely penalty stop helped secure the playoff victory against Haiti.

**Which teams do you think will emerge from Group B? Let us know in the comment section. **

  • USA vs. Dominican Republic, 2024 W Gold Cup: What to watch for

Photo by Brad Smith/ISI Photos/USSF/Getty Images for USSF

    Time to get it started.
The United States Women’s National Team take the field tomorrow against the Dominican Republic as they embark on a new journey with the start of the 2024 W Gold Cup. The inaugural tournament is the first chance in 2024 the USWNT have to play, and it’s the first opportunity to win a trophy.

2024 is a year of transition for the USWNT, as Emma Hayes will take over as head coach towards the end of May and Twila Kilgore continues to manage the team on an interim basis. There seems to be a movement of youth entering to establish a new younger core of the team. At the same time, they balance this transition with 2024 being a year of importance, with the W Gold Cup and Olympics serving as opportunities to claim a championship. The USWNT want to begin by claiming this inaugural edition of the W Gold Cup.

Their first opponent are Las Quisqueyanas, the upstarts from the Dominican Republic who have shocked everyone by getting to the group stage of a major tournament for the first time. They won’t back down and they will once again be looking for the monumental upset, so the USWNT cannot take them lightly as we embark on the maiden voyage of the W Gold Cup.

Recent Form

USA

W (2-1) - China - Friendly

W (3-0) - China - Friendly

W (3-0) - Colombia - Friendly

D (0-0) - Colombia - Friendly

W (2-0) - South Africa - Friendly

Dominican Republic

W (1-0) - Guyana - 2024 W Gold Cup Prelims

W (2-0) - Bermuda - W Gold Cup Qualifying League B

W (7-1) - Barbados - W Gold Cup Qualifying League B

W (4-0) - St. Vincent & the Grenadines - W Gold Cup Qualifying League B

W (8-0) - St. Vincent & the Grenadines - W Gold Cup Qualifying League B

Roster

GOALKEEPERS (3): Jane Campbell (Houston Dash), Casey Murphy (North Carolina Courage), Alyssa Naeher (Chicago Red Stars)

**DEFENDERS (8): *Abby Dahlkemper (San Diego Wave FC), Tierna Davidson (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Crystal Dunn (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Emily Fox (Arsenal FC, ENG), Naomi Girma (San Diego Wave FC), Casey Krueger (Washington Spirit), Jenna Nighswonger (NY/NJ Gotham FC), Becky Sauerbrunn (Portland Thorns)

MIDFIELDERS (6): Korbin Albert (Paris Saint-Germain, FRA), Sam Coffey (Portland Thorns FC), Lindsey Horan (Olympique Lyon, FRA), Rose Lavelle (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Olivia Moultrie (Portland Thorns FC), Emily Sonnett (NJ/NY Gotham FC)

FORWARDS (6): Mia Fishel (Chelsea FC, ENG), Midge Purce (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Trinity Rodman (Washington Spirit), Jaedyn Shaw (San Diego Wave FC), Sophia Smith (Portland Thorns FC), Lynn Williams (NJ/NY Gotham FC)

*Becky Sauerbrunn replaced Alana Cook, who was withdrawn due to injury, on the roster

What To Watch For

**Time for the new era? **With some of the younger players getting their first shot at a major title, could we see a shift in USWNT’s approach by playing them? Players like Mia Fishel, Jaedyn Shaw, Korbin Albert, and Jenna Nighswonger could factor into this match to show that the future is now. We await the lineup to see where Kilgore decides to go.

**The midfield needs to be dynamic and crisp. **The USWNT always struggle when their midfield isn’t dynamic and sharp with the ball. They have to be the ones to maintain possession and keep the ball moving forward, while also relieving pressure from the back line by keeping the ball in front of them on defense. Finally, crisp passes are the key. When we’re sloppy with the ball, it makes for a long day.

**Don’t gift any hope to the opposition. **The Dominican Republic is looking for the upset. The USWNT need to get out quickly and never let Las Quisqueyanas get any belief that they can pull off the shocker.

Prediction

The USWNT win 4-0, but it’s not fully convincing.

The USWNT opens the tournament against a Caribbean opponent.
The newest edition of the CONCACAF W Gold Cup begins this year, providing a “flagship” championship for the region. The United States Women’s National Team hosts the 12-team tournament and can add another bauble to an already packed trophy case. The opening fixture is against Dominican Republic, which has reached the first final regional or global competition in program history. As with all Group A matches, the host is Carson, California’s Dignity Health Sports Park, a 27,000-seat soccer-specific stadium with a Bandera Bermuda® grass surface.

¡Kathrynn González abre el marcador del partido con un GOLAZO! pic.twitter.com/ldDeXlgtG8— W Gold Cup (@GoldCup) February 17, 2024

This is the second all-time meeting between the two nations, with the USWNT triumphing in the only previous meeting by a 14-0 margin in January of 2012. Ranked 107th internationally by FIFA, the Dominican Republic qualified for the Gold Cup by finishing atop League B Group C with a 5-0-1 record, falling to Bermuda (0-2), taking down Barbados (3-0 and 7-1) and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (8-0 and 4-0), before avenging the opening loss (2-0). In the playoff round, Las Quisqueyanas defeated Guyana in a tight battle (1-0).

Henry Parra was appointed to the manager role in March of 2023 after the Dominican Football Federations reviewed “a large number of coaches.” He has an A License from the Colombian Football Federation and CONMEBOL. The Colombian stated that his goal was “not to change anything but to give continuity to the [previous] excellent work.”

¿KLK ?

Parra named a 23-player roster for the Gold Cup, a very young group mostly based in the United States. All of the key performers from qualifying are included in the squad. There are 14 call-ups attending American colleges and high schools, while two are currently on the books at European clubs.

***

GOALKEEPERS (3): Paloma Peña (University of Florida), Odaliana Gómez (Florida International University), Carolina Moreno (Cibao FC)

DEFENDERS (8): Alexa Pacheco (Goldey-Beacom College), Nadia Colón (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley), Brianne Reed (SF Damaiense SAD), Renata Mercedes (Connecticut FC), Keisla Gil (Central Methodist University), Gabriella Cuevas (Unattached), Giovanna Dionicio (University of Connecticut), Claudia Alcántara (Fundación Eagles FC)

MIDFIELDERS (5): Stella Tapia (University of Michigan), Winibian Peralta (Puerto Viejo FC), Yomerci Brito (5 De Abril), Jaylen Valecillo (East Meadow Soccer Club), Dahien Cabrera (Edward Waters University)

FORWARDS (7): Kathrynn González (FC Thy-Thisted Q), Lucía Marte (Watford), Vanessa Kara (Unattached), Jazmin Jackson (Virginia Commonwealth University), Angelina Vargas (Brown University), Alyssa Oviedo (University of Vermont), Mía Asenjo (University of Central Florida)

***

Operating out of a few different formations, the manager has stressed employing a transition game with the intent of “taking possession of the dangerous ball to transform it into goals” while “improving positioning in the area.” The Dominican Republic pushes the tempo and looks to play a fast and vertical direct style, hitting speculative long passes and early crosses whenever possible but also placing a high priority on set pieces. Transition defending was an issue during qualifying, as counter-attacking opponents were able to disrupt the cohesion and spacing of the back line with solo dribbling runs.

Projected Dominican Republic Starting XI (via BuildLineup.com)

Just shy of her 19th birthday, Paloma Peña earned the start in the playoff against Guyana. She spent her freshman year of college at the University of Florida but failed to register a minute for the Gators, yet has picked up significant experience at the youth international level. The 5’11” goalkeeper is strong in the air on crosses and quick to come off of her line. Her athleticism and attuned reactions are useful when making saves, particularly on long-distance attempts.

Former Monmouth University standout Gabriella Cuevas was recently on the books at Polish side UKS SMS Łódź. The 30-year-old defender is very comfortable on the ball and can dictate the possession-based build-up phase with shrewd passing decisions. Fellow New Jersey native Brianne Reed started every match during qualifying, providing veteran experience and “an aggressive style of play” with superb athleticism. She is praised for “commanding the ball both in the air and on the ground level,” whether serving as a dangerous target in the box or shutting down the opponent with crunching tackles.

Flashback to Gabriella Cuevas’ header against Bolivia in a friendly last month!

Miami-born Nadia Colón recently wrapped her fourth season at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, providing energy and athleticism on the wing with the pace to push forward and wreak havoc before hitting an incisive cross. She is more than adequate as a ball-stopper and excels at getting in the way of passing lanes. Teenager Renata Mercedes made her senior international debut during the fall, capable of lining up on the inside and on the wing. The 16-year-old defender is a productive target on set pieces and shuts down one-on-one opportunities.

Municipal Pérez Zeledon midfielder Winibian Peralta is quick to the action and looks to play vertically, breaking out onto the counter-attack and occasionally launching a shot from long distance that troubles the goalkeeper. She will dribble for long periods of time in order to stall for time before picking out an advancing teammate. East Meadow SC and Manhattan SC technician Jaylen Vallecillo picked up five starts in Gold Cup qualifying after switching over from Honduras. The teenager is “comfortable at both recreating her own shot and serving as a holding forward,” being named as one of the top players in New York by Alianza de Futbol. New Jersey’s Alyssa Oviedo recently completed a six-season collegiate career at the University of Vermont, compiling 13 goals and seven assists in 73 total appearances. Already a seven-year member of the senior national team, her “slipped through balls,” low center of gravity, and work rate allow for her to make an impact in the final third.

¡Gran inicio de segundo tiempo para República Dominicana con el gol de Lucia Marte! pic.twitter.com/GwrZMmXxvn— W Gold Cup (@GoldCup) December 2, 2023

One of the program’s biggest figures, Watford defender Lucía Marte is praised as “a hard-working and technical” player who is “keen to join the attack.” The former Spain youth international looks to push deep into the final third with long dribbling runs and possesses the prowess to carve up opposing back lines. Kathrynn “Kat” González of FC Thy-Thisted Q was named to the CONCACAF Best XI for November, operating as a connective force to teammates with all manner of passes. When given the time and space, the 23-year-old can launch an effective shot from distance with either foot, particularly when pushing through the center in transition.

Leading the formation is University of Central Florida sophomore attacker Mia Asenjo. She contributed three goals and three assists last fall for the Knights while displaying intelligent movement on both sides of the game. The 2021 Gatorade Florida Girls Soccer Player of the Year always manages to pop up in the right area to find the ball and looks to push the attack forward. Her tireless work in the press can also lead into quick transitions, providing an opportunity to use her long, galloping strides to get behind the back line.

Gol de República Dominicana.

There is a dramatic difference in quality between the respective talent level of the rosters, with the Dominican Republic having a few players at clubs in top-tier leagues. The USWNT should be expected to open the inaugural Gold Cup with three points and get in sync on the attacking side of the ball, building up momentum during the relatively abbreviated schedule. Should the visitors even pull off a draw, the shock result would send reverberations throughout the sport and perhaps indicate lingering issues for the hosts in the fallout of a disappointing run at the 2023 World Cup.

The match is scheduled for Tuesday, February 20th at 10:15 p.m. Eastern, 7:15 p.m. Pacific. Viewing options include ESPN+, ESPN Deportes, Paramount+, and FUBO TV (free trial).

We begin our W Gold Cup previews with Group A.
The 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup starts this coming week, and 12 teams will fight for the chance to make history as the first champions of this tournament. 8 Concacaf teams are joined by 4 teams from CONMEBOL - Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Paraguay - in 3 groups, where the top 2 will advance as well as 2 of the 3rd place teams.

Group A figures to be an intriguing one, with the best team in Concacaf, the United States, taking on a couple of teams in Mexico and Argentina that desire to break into that next level of teams in the world and the Dominican Republic, who are looking to continue to provide the upset. It will be the group that likely commands the most attention, but the action on the field will surely bring some fireworks and tense moments for fans of each of the teams. We’re looking forward to these 4 teams challenging each other for Group A supremacy

Schedule

Tuesday, February 20th

USA vs. Guyana/Dominican Republic

Mexico vs. Argentina

Friday, February 23rd

USA vs. Argentina

Guyana/Dominican Republic vs. Mexico

Monday, February 26th

USA vs. Mexico

Argentina vs. Guyana/Dominican Republic

United States

The USWNT enter 2024 looking to re-establish themselves as the best team in the world. They are first focused on setting the pace in this competition and find the focus and drive that made them invincible for so long. They’ve brought in some younger players who are hungry to produce goals and defend, and it feels like the beginning of some change in the program. However, having younger players on the team means it’s the first time for many of them in big time competition like this tournament. That’s where the World Cup veterans need to lead the way and help the team take care of business.

**FIFA Ranking: **2

Odds of Winning Group: Clear favorites

One to Watch: Mia Fishel is ready to announce herself officially on the international stage. Look for her to make a big impact up front.

Argentina

La Albiceleste enter this tournament looking to make a statement that they can move into the conversation as one of the best teams in the Americas. They have finished 3rd in the two most recent Copa América Femenina tournaments, and this is an opportunity for them to take the next step. However, Argentina have to overcome some history in this group: they are are 0W-5L-0D against the United States and 1W-8L-1D against Mexico all-time. To win this group, they will need to beat at least one of those teams.

FIFA Ranking: 31

Odds of Winning: Needs Help

One to Watch: Mariana Larroquette has 22 goals in 79 caps for Argentina, and she will look to provide some more goals for the team up front.

Mexico

Mexico enters the W Gold Cup with something to prove. They failed to qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup as well as the 2024 Summer Olympics, so they’ve been working hard from within to improve their squad. They’ve brought in some younger budding stars, some of whom won the gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games. Now, they want to bring it in a tough Group A and re-establish Mexico as one of the teams to beat in this region.

**FIFA Ranking: **35

Odds of Winning: Needs help

**One to Watch: **Diana Ordóñez has become a star in the making in her short time on La Tri, and she could be poised for a breakout at this tournament.

Dominican Republic

Las Quisqueyanas upset Guyana in the Gold Cup Prelims to advance to the group stage. They’re complete underdogs in this group, but they will not be scared of any team they take on. This is the first major tournament that the Dominican Republic has qualified for in their history, and they want to continue to make history with this group.

**FIFA Ranking: **107

**Odds of Winning: **Slim To None

**One to Watch: **Kathrynn González scored the lone goal in the Dominican Republic’s win over Guyana, and she’s going to be a player to watch as they enter the group stage.

Who will advance from Group A? Cardoso is off to a hot start in La Liga, and more action around Europe this weekend
Johnny Cardoso is off to a hot start since joining Real Betis, including picking up his first assist last weekend. The PSV trio look to continue their undefeated Eredivisie season, and the USMNT contingent in Italy look to hang with the big boys. There is quite a bit of meaningful action this weekend and it starts on Friday, so let’s get to it.

Friday

PSV Eindhoven v Heracles - 2p on ESPN+

Ricardo Pepi continues to come off the bench for PSV Eindhoven, but scored his 5th goal last weekend as PSV defeated FC Volendam 5-1. Pepi has scored his five goals in just 229 minutes of play this season, a remarkable (and likely unsustainable) pace. While Pepi continues to come off the bench in his super sub role and Malik Tillman also came off the bench last weekend in his return from injury, Sergiño Dest continues to start for undefeated PSV, who have only 2 draws in league play this season. PSV face Heracles on Friday evening, a side that are just four points out of the relegation playoff spot, but are coming off a 3-2 win over bottom of the table Vitesse.

Saturday

Wolfsburg v Borussia Dortmund - 9:30a on ESPN+

Kevin Paredes started and played 74 minutes last weekend in Wolfsburg’s 1-0 loss to Union Berlin. Wolfsburg are looking for their first win in two months and have fallen to 12th place in the Bundesliga standings. They face a Borussia Dortmund side that have won four of five since returning from the winter break, their lone slip up coming in a scoreless draw with Heidenheim. In each of Dortmund’s victories, they have scored at least three goals. The first time the teams played this season, in late September, Paredes was not included in the matchday squad and Wolfsburg fell to Dortmund 1-0.

Hoffenheim v Union Berlin - 9:30a on ESPN+

John Brooks was out last week for Hoffenheim due to a yellow card accumulation suspension as his side drew with Köln 1-1. Brooks had started the previous two matches for Hoffenheim, which were also both draws. Brooks and Hoffenheim will be facing Union Berlin and Brenden Aaronson this weekend in a rematch of their 2-0 victory in September. Aaronson started that September loss, but was pulled at halftime and has only started two matches since then.

Heidenheim v Bayer Leverkusen - 9:30a on ESPN+

Lennard Maloney picked up his first Bundesliga goal last weekend as Heidenheim defeated Werder Bremen 2-1. Maloney has started every match for Heidenheim this season, and the team is now in 9th place and undefeated in their last eight matches. They will face league-leading Beyer Leverkusen, who have not suffered a Bundesliga defeat this season and defeated Heidenheim 4-1 in their first matchup this season.

Fulham v Aston Villa - 10a on Peacock

Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson both played the full 90 for Fulham last weekend in a 3-1 win over Bournemouth that saw the sides swap places in the EPL table, with Fulham now in 12th place. The three points also pulled Fulham a full 10 points out of the relegation zone. They now face fifth place Aston Villa, who are just a point out of Champions League position.

Nottingham Forest v West Ham United - 10a on Peacock

Nottingham Forest is still looking for their first win since benching Matt Turner in favor of Matz Sels as well as bringing in Giovanni Reyna from Dortmund. Reyna has played a handful of minutes the past two weeks, but has thus far been unable to make a difference for the Forst side that are coming off a 3-2 loss to Newcastle United and are in 16th place, just two points removed from the relegation zone.

Hellas Verona v Juventus - Noon on Paramount+

Tim Weah received his first start in over a month for Juventus and joined Weston McKennie in the starting lineup but their team fell 1-0 to 16th place Udinese and dropped seven points back of Inter Milan. Juventus now face Hellas Verona, who are in the relegation zone in 18th place.

RB Leipzig v Borussia Monchengladbach - 12:30p on ESPN+

Joe Scally saw his 12-match starting streak snapped last weekend as he came off the bench for the final 20 as Borussia Mönchengladbach was held to a scoreless draw by last place Darmstadt, who picked up just their twelfth point of the season. Jordan Pefok started the match, but had to be subbed in stoppage time of the first half due to a hamstring injury. Pefok initially tried to play through the injury, but was unable to continue. ‘Gladbach remain six points out of the relegation zone and now face fifth place RB Leipzig, who are coming off a 1-0 loss to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.

Celta Vigo v FC Barcelona - 12:30p on ESPN+

Luca de la Torre has started four straight for Celta Vigo, but his side fell 3-2 to Getafe last weekend and slipped into 17th place, just three points ahead of Cadiz and the relegation zone. Celta Vigo now face third place Barcelona, who have two of three but are coming off a 3-3 draw with Granada and are 10 points back of Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga title.

Sunday

Sheffield United v Brighton & Hove Albion - 9a on USA Network

Auston Trusty was benched last weekend and Sheffield United snapped a seven-match winless streak as they defeated fellow relegation candidate Luton Town 3-1. Trusty had started 16 straight matches, but Sheffield had won just twice in that stretch, though they had also failed to win prior to him joining the starting lineup. Last weekend’s victory was just the team’s third win of the season. On Sunday, they will face a Brighton & Hove Albion side that they played to a 1-1 draw in November.

Monaco v Tolouse - 9a on beIN Sports

Folarin Balogun saw 10 minutes off the bench last weekend as Monaco moved into third place with a 3-2 win over second place Nice. Balogun entered the match shortly after his team scored their third to retake the lead in what was a back and forth affair. On Sunday, Monaco will again face a Toluse side that they saw in late December, a match which Monaco won 2-1 with Balogun earning the penalty on the deciding goal.

Monza v AC Milan - 2:45p on Paramount+

Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah both started Thursday in AC Milan’s 3-0 win over Stade Rennais in Europa League action. Pulisic has also started every match in which he’s been fit for Milan, while Yunus Musah received his first start in two months as he played the full 90. Milan have won seven of nine and face a Monza side that is coming off a pair of scoreless draws.

Real Betis v Deportivo Alaves - 3p on ESPN Deportes and ESPN+

Johnny Cardoso continues to start and be a key figure for Real Betis since joining the club in mid January. Betis lost to Dynamo Zagreb 1-0 on Thursday in Europa Conference League play, with Johnny playing the full 90. Last weekend, Betis defeated Cadiz 2-0 as Johnny picked up an assist after pressing high and forcing a turnover to open the scoring. The win moved Betis into sixth place. On Sunday, they face Deportivo Alavés, who are middle of the table with 27 points and are coming off a 1-1 draw with Villarreal.

Follow all the action in the comments!

  • USMNT drops to 13th in FIFA world rankings

Daniel Dunn-USA TODAY Sports

They’re down 1 spot from December.
The FIFA world rankings were updated today, and the United States Men’s National Team has dropped just 1 spot. In the February 2024 world rankings, the USMNT dropped to 13th, just one spot above Colombia, who will face the United States in a pre-Copa América friendly in June.

The top 10 in the world remained unchanged, with all of them remaining idle during the month of January: Argentina, France, England, Belgium, Brazil, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Croatia.

The USMNT only lost 3.57 points between December and today’s rankings, which dropped them just below Morocco, who gained 1.70 points due to their participation in the Africa Cup of Nations. Most of the movement in the rankings were based on the results of the Africa Cup of Nations, won by Ivory Coast, and the Asian Cup, won by Qatar for the second consecutive time.

Despite dropping a spot in the rankings, the USMNT remain the top ranked team in Concacaf. Mexico is 15th, followed by Panama (44), Canada (50), and Costa Rica (54). Jamaica, who the USMNT will face in the semifinals of the Concacaf Nations League, are at 57th.

Is 13th where you would put the USMNT? Discuss in the comments.

The Seattle Sounders teenager could be heading into a big year.
The advent of the new Major League Soccer competition brings forth the opportunity for young talents to build on the successes of the previous year. Some who made their initial breakthrough are able to continue on an upward trajectory while also contributing at the international level. Reed Baker-Whiting saw a sharp uptick in playing time in 2023, displaying his versatility and tenacity playing against older competition. While still only 18 years of age, the Seattle Sounders fullback and midfielder is entering his fifth season as a professional and could find himself in contention to join the United States Under-23 Men’s National Team at the upcoming Olympic Games.

Reed Baker-Whiting scores for the U-19’s! pic.twitter.com/k1nxf2dnf3— Seattle Sounders FC (@SoundersFC) September 21, 2022

Born in Seattle, Baker-Whiting played with Seattle United before entering the Sounders academy in 2016, winning the Youdan Trophy and the Champions Division of the Generation adidas Cup, converting the deciding free kick in the former competition. “Excelling in various midfielder roles,” he was promoted to the reserve team, Tacoma Defiance, in July of 2020. His first season ended with seven appearances in the USL Championship, growing his “overall understanding of tactics” while “improving in the physical and technical areas.”

Baker-Whiting began the following year with the reserves but signed a first-team contract in May, a four-year deal with an additional club option. After making his debut as a substitute in a match with LAFC at the age of 16, he split time between the two levels, appearing 16 times for Tacoma and in four MLS fixtures. In addition to training with Real Sociedad, European clubs Liverpool, Manchester City, and Borussia Dortmund were reportedly scouting the “promising player with positional versatility.” The following season continued along the same path, with the teenager featuring in a combined 18 league and cup fixtures spread across both squads.

Reed Baker-Whiting glides through & finds Dylan Teves for the finish!

After being named to the Next Generation list of the world’s best young talents by **The Guardian **and training with FC Freiburg in Germany, last year was something of a breakout season for Baker-Whiting. He made 23 total appearances with the first team, including earning spots on the Team of the Matchday for Matchday 32 and Matchday 35 and becoming a rotational starter toward the end of the schedule. His first goal with the Sounders came in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, helping to defeat San Diego Loyal SC. Wolverhampton, Hoffenheim, and Manchester United were reportedly scouting him, and while the Sounders had yet to receive any offers as of last August, the interest aligns with his stated objective of eventually playing in Europe.

“Reed has made big strides this year,” said Seattle manager Brian Schmetzer. “He’s a very talented kid. He plays well on the right, a couple games back showed some versatility that he could play on the left and still do the same job and still be effective. So, it’s always handy to have one player that can play on both sides of the field if needed. He’s really taken some big steps forward this year, and it’s a credit to him.”

Reed Baker-Whiting makes his contribution to this Open Cup classic for @SoundersFC with this !

After injuring his hamstring twice last fall, Baker-Whiting has been dealing with a rehabilitation process that carried over into 2024. He is expected to miss the beginning of the MLS season “and may not be at full strength until March.” Additionally, should the club fail to provide him with significant minutes in the spring, local media speculates that his move to Europe could come in the summer transfer window.

As an international, Baker-Whiting has been a member of the United States program since the U-14 level. The midfielder-defender was included in U-19 group that claimed the 2022 Slovenia Nations Cup, being cited as a “standout star.” He was named to the roster for the 2023 Pan American Games but was forced to withdraw after the Sounders declined his call-up due to his having “played his way into significant minutes” in MLS.

Alex Roldan on the volley!

Standing at 5’11”, Baker-Whiting is capable of lining up at both fullback positions and center midfielder, described as “very clean on the ball” and “a pretty good passer” with “a good feel for the game” and “good vision and timing.” Despite the limited sample size, he has registered positive statistics in progressive carries, passing completion, and successful tackles, ranking as one of the top players among his positional cohort in MLS. Observers praise him as “two-footed” with “the strength to muscle off veteran players and the skill to play devastating crosses.”

Baker-Whiting’s performance against Moldova in the Slovenia Nations Cup was broken down by Target Scouting. “He has decent pace for the fullback position and made use of it,” wrote Aidan McHenry. “Baker-Whiting translated that pace into great recoveries on defence. He took good angles and closed down well on the break and was able to settle the opposition himself or win the ball back... He utilized his physicality in duels putting in several tackle attempts, both standing and sliding, for an okay win rate. The fullback also used his physicality to overwhelm smaller wingers and force them into bad decisions... On offence, he was a natural playmaker and calm with the ball at his feet on the right side.”

An amazing effort from Reed Baker-Whiting results in an own goal from STL! #STLvSEA | #Sounders pic.twitter.com/AKY7ry324d— Seattle Sounders FC (@SoundersFC) October 22, 2023

While still young, Baker-Whiting has already gained valuable professional experience and carved out a role with the Sounders that should only increase this season. He still has to go through challenges of earning a consistent starting spot and handling any drops in form while maintaining his position, but the teenager has displayed the resilience to climb his club’s development ladder. A player of his talent should continue to rise, with additional experience to be gained at the international level, perhaps even accomplishing his “long-shot goal” of competing with the U-23 team in Paris next summer.

They return to the Capital Region for the first time since 2019 to prep for Copa América.
The United States Men’s National Team is returning to the DMV. In a live press conference on Tuesday morning, U.S. Soccer announced alongside the Washington Commanders that the USMNT will play Colombia on June 8th in a friendly at FedExField in Landover, Maryland. Kickoff will be at 5:37pm and will be broadcast on TNT, Telemundo, Universo, Max, and Peacock.

The match is serving as a tune up for the USMNT ahead of this summer’s Copa América. Ranked 14th in the December 2023 FIFA world rankings, Los Cafeteros are currently in 3rd place in World Cup qualifying in CONMEBOL with an unbeaten record of 3W-0L-3D. They are one of the stronger teams in the world with a 19-match unbeaten streak, and they post a true test for the USMNT as they prepare to host South America’s continental tournament.

“As we continue to build toward this summer’s Copa America and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, we relish the challenge of competing against the best possible opponents and Colombia checks that box. They have been a standout team in World Cup Qualifying and showcase some of the world’s top talent,” USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have the U.S. Men’s National Team back to FedExField and the DMV, a place with an incredible history of support for our team and for soccer overall.

The USMNT have struggled against Colombia, with a 3W-13L-5D record all-time against Los Cafeteros. Their most recent match was a 0-0 draw back in January 2023. They played each other twice in the 2016 Copa América Centenario, with Colombia winning the group stage match 2-0 and again winning in the 3rd place match, 1-0. The USMNT last recorded a win against Colombia in March 2005.

It’s the first time that the USMNT have been in the National Capital Region since October 2019, when they beat Cuba 7-0 at Audi Field in the team’s first ever Concacaf Nations League match. The team has played just once before at FedExField, a 4-1 defeat to Brazil back in May 2012. The USMNT have played in the DC area more than any other city in the United States, with legendary RFK Stadium hosting the most matches (24) of any stadium. The team hopes to bring some of that RFK magic a few miles down the road to FedExField on June 8th.

We're headed to the DMV!
