World Food Programme suspends staff movements in Gaza after Israeli forces fired on a vehicle near a Gaza checkpoint.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced a pause in the movement of its employees in the Gaza Strip “until further notice” after one of its vehicles was hit by gunfire just metres from an Israeli-controlled checkpoint.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric blamed Israel for the attack, telling reporters in New York that the “clearly marked” humanitarian vehicle was “struck 10 times” by Israeli gunfire, including with bullets targeting front windows.
Five of the bullets were on the driver’s side and some on the windscreen.
Dujarric said the convoy’s movements had been coordinated with the Israeli military and it had clearance to approach.
My god this bot is problematic... Really makes me lose all respect for the .world ecosystem of mods and admins that they've heard the feedback and refused to do anything without even considering the possibility of just not having this bot at all. All feedback is replied to with basically "you must implement a bot for us in order for us to take you seriously"
A bot that just spams the media ratings of some random dude is so incredibly a techbro non-solution to the actual problem of people posting questionable sources. Not only does it not stop people from posting questionable sources to begin with, it creates a bunch of off topic chatter about the rating itself. So now instead of just removing poor sources, poor sources get a comment that probably 90% of people voting aren’t going to see. This is somehow progress, despite changing nothing.
everybody is. Every human. everything humans create, all has a bias. Worse... that might not even matter because their process has got to basically be "we do a spot check of articles to make sure they're factually accurate and then we fit them where we thing they fall on the US political spectrum"
The reality is there's no way to know how thorough they actually are, and for most publications- even "small" publications- it's a bit of a joke to think five to ten articles is enough to determine reliability. other similar groups like Allsides and Ad Fontes have hundreds of employees/contractors reviewing outlets and their analysis is still remarkably circumspect.
MBFC has nine employees, including the founder. Nine.
Yes it is very disappointing. I believe the bot is actively harmful and have raised concerns through the proper channels only to be told they are not open to removing the bot at all. No reason given as to why the option should be off the table. Just have to hope that people see the downvotes and hesitate to take the ratings at face value.
The !news team has recently changed course and opted out of the bot. AFAIK it will still operate in !world and !politics, but I want to share the news and thank everyone who has given feedback, downvoted, and protested the bot. This isn't over, but I feel we've reached an inflection point.
Yeah its hard to argue for it after thinking for 5 seconds. If there was such a thing as an objective fact check, then we would be enjoying world peace. But there isnt, so stop running a bot that pretends to be. Weird centralized authority fascism bullshit.
I lost respect when they decided to defederate from the largest piracy community on the fediverse. I knew right then and there when push comes to shove, .world falls in line under the powers that be. Would have stayed on reddit if that's what I wanted.
For sure. That one I can at least... Understand or appreciate that it is related to how hard it is to host potentially illegal content in the jurisdiction the instance is hosted in. But the way the MB/FC situation has been handled is... Embarrassing. Like there's no way to defend it other than "you yourselves are biased and you want to dictate the kind of bias that is acceptable"
It speaks to a lack of media literacy by the moderation administration of the instance
