The sad thing is McCain could have easily beat a black guy if he didn't pick a woman as his running mate.

I think they meant Obama was representing a kind of progress that McCain thought he needed to compete with but his base would have been happier if he had just said "fuck that shit" instead of trying to be a conservative version of woke.
It's quite possible that McCain picking Sarah Palin as his running mate lost him more votes than it gained him for trying to be progressive.
I can imagine it losing him both the republican voters who dislike women and all the voters who simply dislike her.
I further believe that women voters while they do like representation they vote based on politics to a further degree.
