I knew some theater kids when I was a kid, and I even tried to fit in with them, but I was too poor and the arrogant pricks shunned and mocked me instead. Going to class was hell with them around. They were full of crocodile tears for The Lion King, though.
Wierd to me that your school let the kids assign roles. At my school it was an audition and the people the theatre teacher liked got all the roles. Granted, they were also pretty good but also they were her faves. People that hadn't been in a play before / weren't in theatre club were lucky to get a part with lines regardless of auditions.

I thought it was weird too, but the theater teacher was so wishy-washy liberal that he thought it was better that way. He basically just provided the costumes, props, materials, and script and wanted the class to figure out who does what, which reinforced the hierarchy of the cool theater kids versus the poor ones.
It was one of those idealistic liberal policies that was intended to empower the students and all that but it just made the elitist asshole ones take over and be teenage despots.
