Lawyers said such public declarations are deeply damaging to his defense, as he regularly appears to admit, on video, to particular elements of the crimes he is accused of committing.

Generally when on trial it's best to keep your mouth shut publicly. This doofus is campaigning, and he's so bad at just following a script, so he goes on insane rants and talks about Hannibal Lecter 's support for him. Running a campaign at the same time as a trial would be challenging for a smart person, but Trump is unable to use his head and keep his mouth shut.
