My only criteria for the 2020 Presidential general election was not actively trying to divide the country and not trying to make enemies of our allies internationally. This became the case because all of the candidates I actually wanted didn't have the support.
I still feel Biden is much better than Trump in those two areas. Is Biden good? No. It's he actively trying to destroy things? Also no.
Are you defending Biden? Do you find his lies acceptable? What about his bolstering of border fascism? More people deported than under Trump? His colonial approach to Latin America? Is that acceptable? His failure to close the torture camp in Cuba? His support for mass surveillance? His literally making a genocide possible? Which marginalized groups are acceptable for us to throw under the bus? What would cause him to lose your support? If not all the lies and atrocities he's committed, then what?
To me, he seems like a politer Trump. He's giving the fascist party everything they want.
"I'm unhappy about all the suffering, death, and oppression of marginalized groups, so I'm going to encourage people to let a candidate win who will bring even more suffering, death, and oppression of marginalized groups"
Link is talking about liking a candidate, you are talking about voting for a candidate, those are different things. I don't like Biden for all the reasons Link said, but I'm voting for him for all the reasons you said.
More immigrants and refugees imprisoned and deported than under Trump (I'm not making this up, his secretary of homeland security Mayorkas has bragged about it)
Supporting Israel's genocide
Urging people back to work during a pandemic (and other ableist policies)
Extending our surveillance state
Continuing the oppression and genocide against Native Americans
Signing queerphobic bills
And other examples which I'm not going to outline here because this is not a debate community, and it is assumed you know of these things before engaging here to avoid having to trot all this out over and over again
"But at least he can be swayed, unlike Trump"
He can? I've seen no evidence of this, and I've seen even less evidence that his Democratic supporters are willing to criticize him, much less take any meaningful action to move him left. In fact, I've seen people going about on lemmy itself saying ridiculous things like "he's the best president we've had in 50 years" -- in the midst of a genocide.
I'm not saying it's not true that he's better than Trump, but he's also doing everything Trump would want and more.
If you decide to vote for Biden, then fine, but we're not continuing this discussion. You are not allowed to support fascism and genocide here, and praising Biden is an example of doing so. That user was breaking the rules.
Not even living in USA. :) but your voting System is a or b or throw your vote in the trash. So you either vote A=trump, someone that tried to overthrow the last election etc. Or B=Biden which is just a tiny bit less evil.
If i was living in the USA i would try to escape that shit hole.
Screaming about the problems doesn't solve them or convince others to. It just makes you annoying. What are you actively doing to fix the situation other than not voting?
