The ABC are taking some poorly thought and knee-jerk decisions lately. They instead should take a State-like approach to their decision making.

I mean, management need to treat their tenure as a small period in an organisation that continues forever. A perspective change, hopefully leading to better deliberative decisions.

No need to rush when you have eternity to play with.

  • They keep appointing LNP and Murdoch approved hacks to the ABC so we keep getting LNP and Murdoch aligned moves, while they are still by far one of the best news sources in Australia, we need to look at the ABC with a critical eye, as with all other media.

    • Yeah, this is important. In such a small traditional media environment they probably feel like they don't have much choice. They should look for talent in new and independent media if they don't already, theres still plenty of people out there, they just have tiny loudspeakers.

      • It will be interesting to see how Murdoch will attempt to control the new generations who get most of their news first-hand through social media. They already try to discredit it, but I don't think many people will want to pay for whatever crap some snooty journalist wants you to read compared with what people on the ground are seeing for free.

I don't want the media to cease to exist - we still need a way to know what is going on but there should be a strong focus on objectivity and reporting events. Opinions belong on personal blog sites, Lemmy comments and Mastodon posts, not mixed in with news. Opinion pieces by journalists are an abuse of power due to their large reach and supposed validity over someone on social media whose opinion in a democracy is equally valid. Another issue I have with opinion pieces is a publication's tendency to only show one side of the story, plus there's no way to reply to the opinion or discuss it - it is presented as fact, the author is not responsible for it and will not respond to your arguments, because you're not a journalist - just an idiot who doesn't have the right opinion.

A little bit of a rant but yeah we need media to change and hiring ABC chairs from other Australian Media isn't going to fix it
