The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) is a political-military organization, formed mainly by indigenous people from the Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Chol, Tojolabal and Mam groups of the State of Chiapas, whose existence was publicly known on January 1, 1994 as a result of of the armed uprising through which it took the city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas and the towns of Las Margaritas, Altamirano, Chanal, Ocosingo, Oxchuc, Huixtán, Chalam, Simojovel and San Andrés Larráinzar.
