I don’t speak German and even if I did I wouldn’t know what is going on as to why there is so many posts in German referencing pizza. Anyone in Germany care to clue me in?
The German feddit (and reddit) space has bursts of memes. A while ago it was stupid puns using sturgeons or eels. Currently it's pizza.
These intense meme storms (Stahlmemegewitter) last for a few days and then blow over.
Of course the Germans have a word for bursts of meme popularity.

Not from Germany but I do speak the language. As far as I can tell, someone used to have a kinda pizza day at work but it's been cancelled so this employee started memeing on the German me_irl.
Do Germans also get shiti pizza parties at work instead of proper comp?
Actually, compared to the US at least, we do get decent comp. I believe the meme spawned from that one incident was more along the lines "We want Pizza Parties" because we've got the rest already.
It started because some germans pizza day got cancelled, but I think the real motivation is a subtle dunk on some earlier meme rotation from americans about corporations trying to placate employees with pizza.
In a nutshell, americans: we don't want pizza, we want unions and worker's rights! Germans: we already have unions and worker's rights, we want pizza!
Even if I didn't had unions and worker's rights, I'd still want pizza. How could one not want pizza?
I don't know about this meme, but you know memes come in waves. It's just the nature of memes.
That said, Germans - at least the Bavarians - have a special relationship with pizza second only to Americans. It's kind of weird, because it's so random. You don't see this in, e.g., Southern France, and Italians seem almost ambivalent to it.
I think it's because, despite the world wars, Germans generally have a fondness for American culture, the same way Americans generally have a fondness for Mexican culture. They have Germanized versions of American food, like we have Americanized versions of traditional Mexican food.
I don't know who the French are fond of, besides themselves.

I don't speak German but I also don't have any kind of language filter on Lemmy so I'm a bit disappointed I haven't seen any pizza memes. I miss the Bean and Beef Stroganoff times
I’m technically German — but after decades of hiding from reality on the anglophone internet, it’s ceased to be my native language or culture…
Internet will wipe a lot of smaller cultures outright over next few generations it seems.
Everything so homogenized but if you don't keep up, you lose on the benefits of global online community and trends
