Cotton fields of Southern Oklahoma

I tried my hand at astrophotography, and I think I did alright. The title is where I was when I took it.

Why are the cotton fields so sporadic? And why is everything else pitch dark?
- I was laying on laying on the ground looking up (at the stars) in a cotton field.
  
  I thought you were a 4-dimensional being taking a cross-section slice of our spacetime.
