Bitchy oligarch isn’t above the law everywhere like he wishes. Hope this helps with his downfall.
There is only one (non-standard) emoji to convey my emotion on the subject
Brazil will thrive after this decision
Oh make the video with new subtitles.
This is how you deal with people like him. After trying to treat them fairly, act with strength and authority. Hit them in the wallet whenever possible.
Well good for them.
Twitter is a cesspool of racism and the preferred platform for Nazis
The NYT really does take Musk at his word even when he's got a real history of banning accounts for saying true-but-left-wing things.
That's probably the worst part of the current press environment. If someone has a history of lying, that does not weigh on how their words are reported.
Cisgender
In a highly unusual move, Justice Moraes also said that any person in Brazil who tried to still use X via common privacy software called a virtual private network, or VPN, could be fined nearly $9,000 a day.
Wild stuff.
... Would they know, if it's via a VPN?
If you make any mistakes whatsoever, then yes.
He tried to forbid VPN downloads too, but backpedaled on that. All the government uses VPN to work from home. Imagine you're in this scenario and open X by mistake, 9k!
I'm brazillian and its not quite blocked yet, can access it as of this moment. It will take some time until all internet providers block twitter
Can you tell us more about the motivations? Seems political more than anything specific musk is doing now that he wasnt doing before.
Im happy to see X go down in flames, but I also dont want citizens silenced if fascism is creeping in.
Mostly because of how Xitter refused to block accounts accounts related to an insurrection at the Capitol, then ignored court orders.
That judge claims the people he wants banned from the platform are anti democracy and what not, but musk refused to comply. Its a complicated subject and my opinion is just that, my own opinion. That judge (most of them in fact) believe themselves to be all mighty, they interpret the law as they see fit and use their supreme court orders to do as they wish, when their role should be only to act as the highest instance of law in the country. Just today he also froze starlink's account in the country to charge fines from the twitter issue, that is not exactly the correct way to go about it, he is over stepping his powers.
To be short: fuck Elon but the supreme court here is also crap and needs a reform.
Not removing misinformation posts, a large amount of unpaid fines, refusal to appoint a legal representative, threatening the judge.
Just out of curiosity: how is the blocking usually implemented? Do they block it via DNS, or is it more sophisticated?
Is not nearly as common as you seem to imply, I have never had to deal with that kind of block in my life. It is being done by the isps themselves, thats all I know
The moment posed one of the biggest tests yet of the billionaire’s efforts to transform the site into a digital town square where just about anything goes.
This is disingenuous reporting of the NYT, just repeating Musk’s untrue “town square” meme, and saying “just about anything goes”. Anarchist and other left wing accounts were the first to be banned, and many accounts and posts from even mildly left or progressive accounts are banned and suppressed. You can’t even say the word “cis”. It’s not a place where anything goes. It’s a place where right wing content is protected and promoted. It’s a Nazi website. Say that.
Though he introduced a new rule against using a term he deems overly liberal: “cisgender.”
Congrats, Brazil!
And nothing of value was lost.
twitter was pile of garbage even before Muskow bought it.
What is this X
A crappy porn site I think.
Pussy in bio!
If you bought Twitter off Temu
Right-wing-nutjob-infested-and-controlled social network.
I think it's what we call Xitter.
Bluesky is experiencing a hockeystick scenario currently, apparently. Probably entirely coincidental.
Blocking Western social media is good. It might boost federated alternatives instead.
Promote mastodon as much as you can because notes a good time to do so.
Lololol.
Keep holding this aristocrat accountable folks
In before he tells countries who block Xitter to go fk themselves.
A two weeks later sues them for blocking him.
https://www.techdirt.com/2022/11/02/hey-elon-let-me-help-you-speed-run-the-content-moderation-learning-curve/ was about right, I think this is level nine in there
Brazilian Hatsune Miku was too powerful for her own good
Fuck Musk and everything, but Xitter has traditionally been a very powerful tool for the masses in impoverished countries to get the word out.
I know Brazil isn't exactly a 3rd world country, but it's not exactly the most stable of governments, either. They just recently had a Jan 6th kind of coup attempt when bolsonaros lost.
I hesitate to consider this a net good, despite hating Musk.
The usefulness of Twitter ended when Musk took over. This is absolutely a new positive thing, as it’s better to use alternatives as opposed to the fascist website. There are lots of communication alternatives available, so it’s not like people won’t have a way to communicate.
The point of guerilla style social media activism that exposes oppression, is to reach as many eyes as possible.
Are there alternatives? Sure. But do they reach anywhere near the same size of an audience? Unless I'm extremely out of touch (I do not consume that kind of social media directly), then it's not even remotely close.
Maybe BlueSky is bigger than I think it is, but I rarely ever hear about it outside of very niche circles (like lemmy).
My point stands. Despite all the mishandling of Xitter, it's still a powerful tool to get grassroots news out for things like protests, oppression. The platform is certainly worse than it was before Musk, but it's still a decent tool for this specific usecase.
There has been a huge spike in BlueSky use, and Lula is now active there.
You once could say the same about Facebook. Both it and X have been used to coordinate genocides.
It's almost as if it was the point all along
This whole thing started because right wing accounts were spreading misinformation and Moraes demanded they were taken down. Musk didn't comply and removed Twitter's legal representative here in order to not suffer the consequences.
While I think it's fair for Twitter to be taken down for that specific reason, the judge is also taking all vpn off google and apple which is incredibly dumb and a dangerous precedent. Lots of people use vpn to work or study. It's like banning a knife because it has the ability to hurt people. I hope they contest this one part at least.
Edit: they just went back on the decision to remove vpn, so it's all good. Hooray.
That was all before Musk. Since musk took over, twitter gives in to all demands for censorship by governments. It went from about 50% to basically 100%. I expect that the information of users isn't safe either.
but Xitter has traditionally been a very powerful tool for the masses in impoverished countries to get the word out.
Maybe a private, for-profit corporation run by a narcissistic billionaire shouldn't be relied on for such things.
